I want to get my major in tourism or hospitality but business is always an option that i can decide if i want at a later date. I want to know what kind of careers i should look at and what kind of courses i should consider taking in college if i want to move to japan when i am around 22 or 23? What should i do and what are some great ways to start learning Japanese now. ( I can speak general Portuguese since i live in a very Portuguese dense town) Domo arigato For all your help!

dude your choice will be good~! living in japan is quite expensive esp. in Tokyo city... You're taking Nursing assitance right? Why not enroll at University of Tokyo? some of the courses there are on the fields of medicine, economics, engineerings etc... or if you dont want to study there, just search some jobs for a while at the city of tokyo or somewhere else in japan. Japanese peoples are hospitable don't worry.. Just study Nippongo (Japanese language) and you'll be able to communicate well. just study first the "Katakana" (the alphabet used by japanese on Foreign language.. ex. English Word "cake" will be "Keki" other ex. English word is "diamond" it will be "Daiyamondo" in Japanese) The second one is "Hiragana" (the alphabet used by japanese on their native language) Then lastly, "Kanji" (a Chinese characters used by japanese everywhere on writing.) after you've master that, you'll be able to speak ..read and write all. ..goodLuck dude!!!!

Japan is not a state of USA. Whole society system is totally different from USA. Your nursing assistant skill has no influence to Japan. Nothing about tourisim or hospitality matters either. Just try to get fluent Japanese that is essential and must thing to do to reach there. Portuguese or such Western languages are nothing to help.

This is the exact state I am in right now. It's neat to see the same questions I have being asked. I'll add you to my contacts, if that's alright? If you ever find out please tell me~

unless you speak and write fluent japanese then all you can do is teach English ...and you will need a visa too...

Unless you have a work visa, you will not be allowed to work in Japan. To get a work visa you must have a University degree, as well as an employer who will sponsor you. The only exception to this is to apply for a position as English teacher through the JET-program. Only as a student on a working-holiday visa can you work as an assistant teacher to help you pay for your stay in Japan. The first thing you should do is to save enough money for a one-month trip, then see if you still like the country. Making Japanese friends in the US, whom you can visit when they are in Japan should be your second priority. They can help you with their language. Japanese learn their language in the following order: Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, Romaji.

Maybe???

See whether or not the college you plan to attend has a study abroad program to Japan. I studied at Waseda University in Tokyo during my Junior year at the University of Redlands, California, and lived with a wonderful host family with whom I remain in touch. It was an awesome opportunity and experience for me -- not just studying Japanese subjects and the language, but experiencing the culture, being able to travel, and making lifelong friends and contacts was priceless. Also, you can look into the Jet Programme, which was also a very rewarding experience. Check out: http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/JETProgram/homepage.html which, like someone else mentioned, is one of the few ways young people can work in Japan: as an Assistant Language Teacher in local Japanese elementary, junior and/or high schools. You must have a bachelor's degree, though, so this may be farther down the road in your future. Good luck!
