What do I need in order to use UK appliances in Japan?

  • I'm travelling to Tokyo and want to take hair straighteners, phone and camera chargers. What do I need, apart from a UK - Japan adaptor plug, to use these appliances? Is it possible to find an adaptor plug that will also adapt the voltage of my appliances to that in Japan?

  • Answer:

The problem with European voltage being 220 is that even if you can find proper adapters, your items will work MUCH slower than you are used too. Also, because of the difference in voltage, your chargers will heat up much more than at home. Don't even pack hairstraighteners; if you really are stuck and need one, they are really cheap in Japan, and you will find hairdryers in every hotel you stay in there. Just take an extra battery(not rechargeable, they don't last) for your camera. You can also not use your phone in Japan unless you have an international phone.

You should prepare both adaptor plug and transformer if you really want to use your own appliances in Japan. Those kits are available on web shopping easily.
