How are you treated if you are a foreign student in Japan?

I have a few questions about Japan?

  • Im 16 years old (17 next month) live in NewZealand and next year Im off in march to spend 10months as an exchange student in Japan, I have a few questions that Im wanting to know, 1) At Japanese shcools how are foreign students treated? 2) Is Physical Education/Gym a subject at shcools that is compulsarary to take?

  • Answer:

1, It depends on each case. But if you go there as an exchange student, teachers would care you so that you can make friends. Don't worry so much. 2, At high school, yes. It's compulsory in most schools.

Other answers

It really depends on your location and the type of school you're going to. If it's in a major city, most people would probably be quite friendly with you. Then again, even if it's in a rural area, they should make you feel welcome. Either they hate you, or you're treated like a celebrity. I'm guessing the latter. Unless you have a medical condition or something, you'd pretty much have to take P.E. Though I do suppose that you can work something out... depends how lenient they are.
