Would U.S customs charge for a $32 package from Japan?

  • I purchased a DVD from Japan the other day. But I'm new to this customs thing and I heard if the price of the package goes over a certain amount ($200 i think) that I will be charged, but I've heard other things too.

  • Answer:

Eh, customs is a bit hit-and-miss even with that supposed $200 limit. I've had plenty of packages come in from Japan that were well over $200 and never got hit with customs charges (watch, now my next $201 package will get charged). I've also heard of friends being very unlucky and getting hit with the fee almost ever time on all of their more expensive packages. But I can't imagine a $32 package will get charged.

I hope that DVD is region 1 or region-free. Customs won't charge you anything.

No. For one DVD. If you ordered something like a Playstation 3, then Customs might take a look, but just regular DVDs generally no. Also remember as the other poster mentioned, hopefully the DVD is either Region 1 or Region Free, or your DVD player might not play it (unless you have a region free DVD player).
