Oh, consider places other than Tokyo also. Mentality of tokyo people is not the same as that of people in Kyoto, Osaka, or Kobe. In order to feel the atmosphere of Japan I was surrounded by while I was growing up, you have to go to Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe area. Inside japan, Tokyo people are considered to be snobbish and frigid and speak dialect which makes me sick. Also, Tokyo people are immoral pleasure seekers. In Tokyo, Sex is everywhere. If you wanna get your cock sucked for a while then there are lots of place for ya. You can get blowjobs for even like 3000 yen in a cheap shop. Tokyo salary men, on their way to their office from lunch , go to that kind of place to relax. In contrast, people in Osaka are normally friendly and nice. Entertainment other than prostitution is well established in Osaka. As for living environment, osaka and other surrounding cities are not as over populated as tokyo area is, which means better housing, reasonable rental price and no crazy commute trains as in tokyo. Sometimes it does not occur to even Japanese, but Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe are cities very close to each other. These cities are major cities in the osaka metropolitan area, which is one of the biggest urban area in the world. Railway network between Osaka and other two cities are built so that you can move around speedy and less costly with handful choices of raiway companies. Because they are physically close and fast transportation system is established there, your living in osaka means living nearby kyoto or kobe. Kyoto is a city of 'must' to visit for foreign tourists. Famous places in kyoto are crowded with tourists from all over the world. As you may know, Kyoto had been the capital city of japan for more than 1000 years before Tokyo took the role. Since it is a very old city, Kyoto hosts a lot of historical architectures which are probably what you might come up with when imagining Japanese architectures(such as Golden temple). However, the nearby cities of tokyo are a mere satellite of tokyo, so dont expect anything from those cities. People in Saitama, a suburb of tokyo, sometimes call themselves tokyo people. Let's consider the world heritage sites. here is the complete list of world heritage sites in japan: 1Temples around Horyu-ji * 2Gusuku (castle) Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryūkyū - 3Himeji Castle * 4Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) + 5Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) * 6Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara * 7Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (Shirakawa-go, Gokayama) / 8Itsukushima Shrine + 9Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape + 10Kii Mountain Range * 11Shirakami-Sanchi # 12Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaidō $ 13Nikkō % 14Yakushima ^ It is better to choose where you spend most of your time in japan based on the number of world heritage sites withing a particular area because by doing so your visit can cover up most number of famous sites in japan. Each mark at the end of each sites corresponds to a particular region in which the site is located. * represents a special area of japan, called Kansai. Kansai has the largest number of world heritage sites because it hosts a number of cultural heritages.

"Live"?? Exactly how are you going to live there? If you're in a rural area there will be no work, not to mention any people who can speak English.

Depends on what you consider to be an everyday place. An everyday place is hardly common in Japan. Most areas even a good portion of the country is quite populated. If you like a small city environment I would say Ito city is a great place to live. It has everything you need and is right along the coast. So if you like beaches it is a good place to be. It is about 2 hours commute to Tokyo depending on what train you take. The people are friendly. There are many onsen retreats. A few foreigners but you would stand out. Rent is reasonable. Jobs might be a bit harder to find. You would probably have to be an English teacher of some sort. If you want to be closer to Tokyo, Yokohama is a beautiful place and parts of it remind me of a city the size of Minneapolis/Saint Paul in the United States. It has a more western flavor and is not quite as pricey as Tokyo but definitly within reasonable commuting distance. The pace isn't as crazy and the people are a little more friendly and jobs are still easy to find. Hope that helps.

Even in Tokyo, there is some place not so expensive, not too crowded. Same in Osaka and Yokohama etc. I think, however, foreigners have no choice to live. You are really difficult to look for the rent itself in Japan without guarantor. Don't ask too much. Wherever you hang coat is just home. Fortunately you don't need to worry about security of life to live in Japan least to say wherever.
