I was transferred to Japan almost 5 years ago. If I look back and reflect on our first year these are things we needed the most help. The biggest unknown was where to live and rent an apartment. Of course you must establish residency and bank accounts before you can rent an apartment. If I had an idea of where I should live and what size of an apartment I could find before I arrived in Japan, I could have made some decisions regarding what to bring and what not to bring to Japan. My suggestion is to work with the Japanese employer to decide the office location and possible areas to live in. That way you could provide some floor plans as a guide. Once we settles in, after a while We needed understanding how to use the medical system. In my case I asked people at work and they explained to me the process. In my case I could speak, read and write Japanese, but my wife could not. We were lucky to have a doctor in the area who spoke English. Kuyakusho help, Our local kuyakusho had an English interpreter avaialable, but for smaller places in the inaka or outside of the 23 ku's there is a need for someone to help with registering at the kuyakusho and asking for services or help. Help with establishing bank accounts. My company established an SMBC account for us, but we wanted to establish a second account with Citibank, as they have more branches in the USA and we could transfer money to the USA more easily. We had to do this on our own. A person who could have helped us establish a second account at SMBC would have made things easier. Help with establishing electricity, gas, phone and water services. In my case, the company provided us assistance, but without that help it would have been impossible for non Japanese speakers. A big help for some gaijin would be a person to help establish keitai, internet, SkyPerfecTV and IP phone services. Last, is furniture and appliances help. Again a person to assist in the purchase process and the delivery would help. If you combined all of these services into a single point of contact this could help any people who will transfer to Japan.

Lack of central heat got tiresome. I like hockey, but even with satellite TV there were few NHL games.

Two things I can think of were information and help There really needs to be a good informative newspaper or magazine that deals with all those issues of how to live in japan, and not just the fluffy (useless) stuff about the major tourist attractions. I think japanese see overseas travel as being about going to the major destinations but westerners often want more information and are prepared to travel to different places that aren't crowded with people. Also I think you could do well with an "advocacy" service. Renting in japan is a nightmare, many real estate agents won't let you get an apartment as soon as they find out you're a gaijin. Getting essential services can be a problem and someone to do these things for you would be great, or at least give advice on HOW to do them
