In countries that don't use numbered addresses, how is mail delivered, how are houses found?

I have never been to Japan but I understand that numbered houses and apartments are not used there, and thats pretty common evidently in the rest of the world. So how do you address a letter to a person in Japan so that it gets to their home, or their business? What would you tell a taxi driver, or what would you put in Mapquest, for example? Just curious. If you happen to know the answer I'd appreciate knowing, thanks.

Answer:
Korea uses the Japanese system, and it is absolutely maddening to try to figure out where anything is or how to get anywhere. Most of the streets have no names. If they do have names, they are not posted. An address starts with the region. Then the city. Cities are divided into boroughs or neighborhoods with their own names, and each neighborhood or borough is divided into sections with numbers. With large apartment complexes, each building has a number, and each apartment has a number. So a typical Korea address for a house works like this: Region City Neighborhood Neighborhood section # For an apartment, it works like this: Region City Neighborhood Apartment-complex name Building # Apartment # Talking to taxi drivers: I just tell them where I want to go. If they don't know the place, I tell them the nearest major landmark. Yes seriously, major landmarks play a major role in directions for everyday life in Korea. If you don't know where anything is, you can't go anywhere at all. Period. It really is that retarded. Incidentally, Koreans in general are horrible at giving directions.

LOL, if you are used to an ordered, well planned life anything else may seem crazy and chaotic, but don't worry, we manage, sorta! We rent mail boxes at a post office, so a persons address would be Mr smith, post office box (P.O. Box) 123, followed by the name of the post office your box is in and then the city, region, then country. No one knows where you are until you tell them. You usually find a prominent building and you say its the third right from the filling station opposite the Calvary church or something like that. when you get lost, you just ask. we are always in someones business, so its not hard to find someone who knows someone who knows you.
