It is cheaper to go by train, if you consider the transit times from Osaka and airport transfers. From Narita Airport you need to take the Narita Express train to either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station (I recommend Shinagawa Station) but not all trains stop at Shinagawa (all trains stop at Tokyo Station): You can find the Narita Express time table here: After you get to Tokyo or Shinagawa Station, you need to change to the "Shinkansen" (the Shinkansen is the "bullet train"). Take the Shinkansen from Tokyo/Shinagawa to MAIBARA Station. When you arrive at MAIBARA Station, you then need to change one more time to the train "LIMITED EXPRESS SHIRASAGI" to FUKUI Station. Total time should be roughly 5 hours (with transfer times) Total cost should be approximately 17,260 Japanese Yen (if you do not have the Japan Rail Pass). So in summary: Narita Airport to Tokyo/Shinagawa: NARITA EXPRESS TRAIN (about 1 hour ride) Tokyo/Shinagawa to Maibara: HIKARI SHINKANSEN TRAIN (about 2 hours 15 minutes) Maibara to Fukui: SHIRASAGI LIMITED EXPRESS TRAIN (a little over 1 hour ride) Total time there is actual train ride times, but you need to factor in transfer times at train stations and between trains, so actual travel time is give or take about 5 hours total. You can make all train reservations at the JR Station at Narita Airport. For more then half the price you can take a overnight bus service from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. The overnight bus goes direct to Fukui and costs 8300yen one way, and takes 9 hours (overnight bus trip). The bus time table is here: http://www.jrbuskanto.co.jp/bus_route_e/cotimep01.cfm?pa=2&pb=1&pc=j0010271&pd=0&st=1 You can see bus departures at 22:10 (10:10pm) and at 23:20 (11:20pm) from Tokyo Station. Arriving in Fukui around 6:30 and 8:10 am the next morning.
