What is Tokyo, Japan like?

  • I would like to know what Tokyo, Japan is like. I'm thinking about moving there. I've been into Japan's history, culture and lifestyle. I'd be living in Japan for roughly a year if I decide to go with my brother who's going for work. I speak Japanese very well and understand Japanese culture very well. Thanks for the answers.

  • Answer:

You can't go with your brother unless your brother is your sole guardian and you rely on him to live (dependent). Are your parents gone and he is your sole supporter? If not, then you would have a hard time coming to Japan to live with your brother. Tokyo is not bad, it is common for people to say it is simply a concrete jungle, which central Tokyo might be, concrete can used to describe many Japanese cities including Kyoto, but Tokyo is huge, filled with mountains, hiking trails, nature etc. This is Tokyo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fujisan_seen_from_takaosan.jpg As this is Tokyo as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sunset_over_Shinjuku.jpg Step out of Central Tokyo to experience that. It's like Kyoto, Central Kyoto (Karasuma district) is a major business hub with department stores, shops, super modern train station, so is Osaka and other major cities of Japan. Step just out of Central Kyoto or the metropolitan areas to visit all the famous temples, shrines etc you read about.

Tokyo is an amazing city with a great vibe. You can spend a lifetime exploring Tokyo and never run out of new things to do and discover. Tokyo is like a collection of separate smaller cities all connected by rail and each of these smaller cities has its own distinct character and attraction. You can't live there on a Brother Visa. You may understand the culture but it seems you don't know about immigration laws. As for Tokyo, you can find things 'Japanese' about it but basically it's a concrete jungle. Very crowded.

You usually need working or student visa to live in Japan. For working visa, you have to get a job offer from a Japanese company. But you can't look for a job in Japan without a visa. So you need it before you enter Japan. For student visa, you have to be admitted to a Japanese college. You need to pay tuition and living cost for 4 years. It could be about $100,000. If you want to become a Japanese citizen, you have to keep living in Japan for more than 5 years without a pause. Then, you will be eligible to apply for citizenship. But you need more like stable income, sufficient reason, Japanese language skill and so on if you want your application to be accepted. You can apply for Permanent Residence of Japan under similar condition. And this is relatively easier than citizenship.

I recommend to work in cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka. and take bacation in rural area like Okinawa, Kamakura, Kumamoto. cos its so stressful to work with japs believes working is the meaning of life, without having balanced between work and life. you will find out most Japs are born to Work not for Life. I don't recommend to work in Japanese company if you can't bear working from 8AM(9AM is the scheduled office hour, though) to 9PM(5PM is the time to leave the office but nobody start to go home with BIG COWARDS). anyway its a good place to go visit as a tourist here. esp. Okinawa. its like south Asian islands like hawaii. ppl are not under stress like in Tokyo.

Tokyo of course is a mega city with about 35 million people in the greater Tokyo area. The living environment varies between the inner parts of the city like Shinjuku and Shibuya which is where most people visit, but most people live much further out where the rents are cheaper. Rents in Tokyo are much higher than other cities like Osaka. Some areas of Tokyo have parks and gardens, while others tend to be lacking any form of greenery. I really like to visit Tokyo, but I wouldn't want to live there for a long time. I prefer place like Kyoto or Osaka, where you get most of the advantages of the mega city, but have a little bit more space to live.
