Is a trip to Japan worth the money?
-
Basing this question on the current conversion rate of about 78 yen to 1.00 USD. I have been wanting to go to Japan for years, and with finishing school and about to start working, I thought the transition time would be perfect. After researching my plans on flight, stay (hostels), and transportation (JR pass), the price is pretty steep. The total price would be about 2,000$ for 2 weeks, or the price a family of 4 could go on a 7-day cruise. I have been extremely excited about going on this trip, but everyone I talk to says I'm a fool for spending so much money on one trip. Although everyone who has said that has never left the US to go overseas. Just wondering what people who have gone would say of if the experience was worth the cost. I'm going not just for relaxation, but to learn about the culture and see the sights as well. Side note: Once I get back from the trip, i'll have roughly 1000$ left to my name while I search for a job. Don't have any bills to pay, living with family still.

I think only you can answer this question. Sure, for anything you want to buy there comes a time when the price is just too high. With the current exchange rate I would say you are looking at a 20% cost increase. I base this on the length of time that the exchange rate hovered around 100 yen/$, as I don't think we are going to see the 140 yen/$ from back in the mid-90s return anytime soon. Personally, I don't see how you arrived at $2K for 2 weeks. With airfare? With JR pass? Would you mind sharing a breakdown of costs with us? You might be too optimistic about what $2K will buy. Be that as it may, you can look at it one of two ways.... 1- Once you find a job finding the time for the trip may become difficult so do it while you can. or 2- Only having $1K and needing a job? With the job market the way it is? Spending the money you may need to get by on until you find a job on a vacation? Only you can make the call. "Worth it" will change from one person to another.

It's all up to your needs. But I don't think exchange rate will stay at this level forever. So you can wait for it if you have time.

Yes, go to Akihabara, known in Japan the holy land (of anime and maid cafes) and buy as much stuff as you can fit on the plane back.
