How To Write In English?

How do you write english in katakana?

  • well, I know katakana rules pretty much, but some words really confuse me, for example for the english word platinum, they write it as purachina instead of purachinamu, and instead of toiretto for toilet they write it as toiru, and for the english word form, they write it as foomu, but for the french word forme, they write it as forumu instead of foomu, so why are there some words that dont follow the katakana rules

  • Answer:

Well I just think of it this way. English is a messed up and complicated language (spelling-wise and gramatically!) so therefore the katakana is just as messed up. I learned not to question it and just memorize them. The craziest I've seen are the two different spellings in Katakana for 'glass'. There is one for window glass and cup glass. Now don't ask me which one is which, I'm still trying to memorize that.

often its a simplified version, maybe to be easier to write or also just easier to pronounce. they also commonly use abbreviations, for example - *jeans is rarely seen as 'jeenzu' but almost always as 'G-pan / jii-pan' *rajikase = radio cassette recorder (raji = radio, kase = cassette) *Yshatsu = white shirt *famicon = family computer (ie playstation/gaming console) *pasokon = personal computer (PC) *baaten = bartender something i have learned after living in Japan for 9 months, is not to ask WHY. Its a question usually avoided and rarely answered satisfactorily. With borrowed words written in katakana there isn't really set rules, its not always about just copying english sounds as closely as possible. therre are many exceptions, and i often wonder why they write it one way when i think its more logicval another - classic example is using 'kya' instead of 'ka'. They say 'kyat' (cat) and 'kyarameru' (caramel) even though there is a perfectly good KA character in katakana. i have even seen the same word here spelled different ways, its rare but i have seen it.
