Who can write you a reference letter?

Reference letter - should I hand-write it?

  • I need to ask my former Japanese teacher for a reference. The problem is he gave me one last year just before I graduated to apply as a JET. I had to cancel that application and now I'm applying to some 英会話 and need him to give me a reference again. I want to hand write my letter to show respect - would this be appropriate? I would be writing in Japanese using some 敬語 (hopefully accurately)

    I basically agree with Noh Yoy in the sense of how you makes the letter look like "document" when you apply for the JET program. I'm not sure of the procedure, but I think the letter needs to be translated into English. (by an authorized translator)

If it's written in English, it should be typed. If it's Japanese, it should be hand-written. Those are the professional standards for each language. If I received a handwritten letter in English, I'd think the person was too lazy to type and would probably be quite critical of their writing. If I received a typed letter in Japanese, I'd think they were too lazy to hand-write it, or didn't know certain kanji. You're applying to an eikaiwa in Japan from a different country and they want a reference letter? If so, I've never heard of that. Anyway, good luck.

Hand-write...in calligraphy. Your teacher would be disrespectful to NOT give you another reference letter if you wrote it in the most convoluted, unreadable, artistic looking calligraphy imaginable.
