Assuming you'll be flying into Narita International Airport. Then YES, BUY THE PASS. The "ordinary" JR PASS is 28,300yen. The Narita Express from (Airport to central Tokyo) is 3,000yen (each way). The Shinkansen (Tokyo/Kyoto) route is about 13,000yen (each way). Multiply that times two for return trips brings you to at least 32,000yen in transport costs. So you're already saving money with the JR PASS.
