Most airplane tickets these days are not physical tickets, they are "e-tickets" meaning no ticketing involved. All you need is a confirmation number, and go to the airport or online the day of travel to pick up your boarding pass. The only people who sell physical tickets these days are few travel agents. The rest do it electronically. So it depends on how he buys the ticket. If it was online, then its most likely an e-ticket and all you need is the confirmation/reservation number(s). If he buys something from a travel agent and they give him a real deal ticket, then use the post office.
