How would I go about studying abroad in Japan?

Can I go to japan without knowing the kanji, and studying the language?

  • I was just wondering if you have to know all japanese kanji to go to Japan. If I am pretty good at the language can I still go as an exchange student?

  • Answer:

You can get by most of the big cities and tourist areas without knowing a lot of Japanese. Most of the signs are in both Japanese and English. A lot of Japanese can speak basic English although they are a little hesitant in using it at times. Restaurants a lot of the time will have a menu in English or with pictures. That said, I would always recommend learning some basic Japanese before your trip as this will make your experience more enjoyable. Try picking up a good Japanese phrase book to help and I also recommend Lonely Planet Japan as a guide book. Travel to Japan http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2010/10/travel-to-japan.html

Yes, but it will be a frustrating adventure so you should know the language. I think you will show some respect too by doing so. My friend lived in Japan for 3 years without knowing the language, but he was constantly irritated. What do you expect? You are in Japan. Just like here in America, you will be better off knowing English since a vast majority of people know English.

ABSOLUTELY it will blow your mind and you will have the best time especially as exchange student you will be treated as a VIP everyone is super nice and helpful in general here is my perspective knowing some japanese but definitely not enough and cannot read a thing BUT travelled with (japanese)spouse, for the most part stayed with family, picked up at airport and all the bonuses everything is a wonder! especially the first time I never had to worry about where to go, how to go, when to go, so hard to totally comment but i have flown many many times Vancouver to Narita, even alone super easy. lots of english signs and english speaking to help still it is a big place and depending on where you from and how much travel you have done- could be alot to take in away from main airport english can be hard to find the good thing is, there can be signs all over. information overload. all in Kanji but the one small sign that says in english " train to tokyo' is the only one you see funny, I have been places with my spouse where she is trying to figure out where we go, or something and I will say-' this train is going north, we have to go up a level' she would be shocked and amazed, and she doesnt see any english even if i tell her its there it is the only thing i see if you were to travel by yourself, it would/could be almost impossible sure you could get around but it would be so hard, and you would always miss so much I went out by myself many times but only places I had already been then sure i explored but nothing too amazing then one time I was to meet a friend in Yokohama pretty basic but first time totally on my own. and some uncharted territory local train (KEISEI) to a larger station, transfer to JR- into Tokyo, then south to Yokohama once in Yokohama, transfer again short 10 minutes to hotel I was fairly confident but aware that it would be tricky. I had alot of backup- written instructions that I tried not to use and I had a phone card so I was never truly on my own and it is only 90 minutes away I walked to the local train station tiny compared to most others several trains but only east or west i cant remember for sure what i did wrong but i abandoned my plan fairly quickly, somehow i was on my way to Narita airport not far but wrong way once there I abandoned my plan and took the shuttle bus YCAT narita airport to Yokohama easy as pie but 4x the price then when i got to yokohama, it wasnt the same train station i had planned on english signs were almost nonexistent i thought i was prepared but tokyo had at least the english version of akihabara and every other station limited but the basics were enough here all kanji i found info centre then i was fine but the simplest thing became impossible and it seems everyone knows some english, but the reality is- most dont know much and alot know absolutely nothing student exchange??? GO

You will need to check the requirements of your exchange program to see how much you need to know before you go, but generally speaking you can get by in Japan without knowing the kanji.

Going to Japan as an exchange student will require some grades. It depends on each program. Just check the program you are going to apply.
