I'm gonna be in Tokyo for about 10-13 days. First time. Should I try to go places outside Tokyo?
-
Since this is my first time, I feel like there is so much to do in Tokyo, that it might be too difficult to go other places. I really want to see/experience everything in Tokyo, so I'm thinking the amount of time I will be there will be good. I'd like to see some of the countryside or traditional Japan and go somewhere like Kyoto or something, but feel it may be too difficult this time around. Should I just stay in Tokyo, or would it be easy to spend a day or two in Kyoto?

Answer:
Of course it's up to you, but I think it would be a good idea to go outside of Tokyo. That's where you will experience what Japan is really like AND you'll see more traditional things. If you are unsure as to whether you will ever be back in Japan in the future, then I would HIGHLY suggest spending a little time outside of Tokyo. If you know you'll be back in Japan, then spending all your time in Tokyo might be the better option.

There are some great places outside of Tokyo, however, Tokyo, Yokohama, and Chiba have enough good places to see that you don't have to leave to see a lot and have fun. I do suggest you spend one day outside of Tokyo. Nikko is a great idea, it's close, but still a different world. Also, you only need to spend a day or so there to soak it all in.

Around Tokyo and easily do-able as a daytrip is Kamakura which has some nice temples and shrines close to the sea and a large outdoor Buddha http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/6836/buddha3jh.jpg An overnight trip worth going to is Nikko which has some beautiful ornate shrines set amongst mountain scenery: http://english.ohmynews.com/articleview/article_view.asp?article_class=5&no=253565&rel_no=1 I think you will be able to fit a quick trip to Kyoto if you factor in the time to get there: 3 hours by shinkansen (bullet train) or 7 hours by overnight bus. If you are here for 13 days - spend 3 in Kyoto and visit Nara as well. The other 10 days spend around Tokyo, Kamakura and Nikko and you'll have a great time having got a good taste of what Japan has to offer.

kyoto info http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3952.html kyoto temple list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kyoto's_Buddhist_Temples kyoto temple map http://kyoto.asanoxn.com/info/kyotomap.htm use shinkansen (bullet train) from tokyo to kyoto. kyoto is very big city. and lots of temples and mountains. better choose some favorite temples first. then you decide which area you want to visit. you cant go all over the kyoto in one or two days. you need more than 3~4 days to explore kyoto.
