Where would I go in Japan for a full time job?

What are my chances of getting a job teaching english in Japan?

  • I'm a Junior at Eastern Michigan University, next year I plan on graduating with a major in secondary education with a minor in english. I'm fluent in japanese, korean, and cantonese. (summer classes and Rstone) I've never been to Japan only to China and Malaysia, the only things I can relate it to are BBC documentaries, movies, and anime. But from those few things, I fell in love with its culture. Is there any chance of being hired into a high school or junior high school as an english teacher (either ESL or English Lit)? If so, what should I expect for salary, housing, and all around living? I'm a workahloic, currently I go to school full time usually in the afternoon while working at an engineering plant in the mornings and as a waiter at night. So I kind of plan on holding more than just one job just for extra spending and hell making friends quicker.

  • Answer:

Are you really proficient in all of those languages? If so, that is quite impressive. So only from summer classes and R.Stone? If you are fluent in all those languages why waste your talent doing a job that monkeys could do? English education in Japan is usually taught by 22 year olds who want to pick up a few Japanese girls before going back to the USA and getting a real job. All you do is stand in the corner of the class during lesson time while the Japanese teacher speaks broken English, and then you do a listening exercise where the students listen and repeat after you. People say that job is like being a "human tape recorder." So why not translation/interpreting/business/engine… Especially since so many Japanese companies are manufacturing in China, there have to be many opportunities available. It's an unfortunate thing, because there are some serious, good teachers here but English in schools is a joke. Find more serious employment.
