What's life like in Japan?

  • My friend and I were planning to go to Japan for a month, and we're just wondering what's life there like? Such as the food/fashion/people, is everything there expensive? Do they treat foreigners differently? I'm Asian myself and I'm from Canada. Will we be able to fit in? And what are some sites in Japan that we should visit?

  • Answer:

Japan is amazing, the people are very nice, and they don't treat foreigners differently. You may see some, but most love foreigners, or act like they are just part of Japan. The food is interesting, and its so fun to eat. What I mean by interesting, is by the new flavors, and new foods. The fashion is really fun, and somewhat the same as in America, and I'm sure in Canda too. Things are a bit more expensive there, but its worth your money. You will fit in well, people just act as if you were Japanese yourself, and if you are a foreigner that speaks english, they like to practice on you. Most which in fact speak english, broken english. Some sites would depend on where you plan to be. The best way of transportation is the subway, and the shikansen (Bullet Train) Tokyo has plenty of shopping districts, but if you are looking for good deals go to places that don't have tons of peopl around. Kyoto is very pretty, and try Maiko, its a geisha apprentice, and they dress you up in a kimono and they put makeup and everyting on you. Its really fun, and they take your pictures and put it in a portfolio. It costs along the lines of of 22,000 yen. Its alot of fun. They also have alot of shrines.. and they give tours all the time. A really fun time to go to Japan is during Golden Week, and Boys day, where they have festivals and some what of a parade. I wish i could really describe Japan to you, but its a must see. The best way to experience Japan, is act as if you arn't a tourist, go to the grocery stores, department stores, local quick marts, hair dressers, what ever you can get into, don't just focas on the big things, but the little things too.

That is quite a broad question. No, everything is not expensive, just make sure you look around. You can find some inexpensive food, clothing and gifts. If something sounds expensive then leave and go somewhere else. Food can be as cheap as 300-400 yen and clothes can be as cheap as 900-1000 yen. Yes, they treat foreigners different. Japan is 98% pure Japanese. There just isn't a large foreign population. They'll be kind to you and will be interested in your culture. Some good sites: Kyoto Nara Tokyo Mt. Fuji Hiroshima Hokkaido Nagano

Adam's statements are accurate. To answer your comments about fashion, the clothes there may seem strange to you as they are a couple of years ahead of the US as far as fashion is concerned. Also, women in Japan tend to be very small. If you are larger than an American size 6, you will have to shop in the plus size section unless you go to Uniqlo and they can accommodate up to a size 8. I am a size 6 and in Japan I wear an XL and sometimes those are a bit snug. As far as shoes go, women's shoes only go up to a size 8 (25 in Japan) unless you go to a store specializing in large size shoes. I lived in Okinawa for three years and loved it. I didn't find things overly expensive except for housing. You can find most any kind of food in Japan. It is not all sushi and teppan although you can find a lot of that there. If you get homesick and need a McDonald's, they have those, too. Korean BBQ places are all over the place, too. I recommend just trying all kinds of different things, that is what I did. I highly recommend buying a guide book to Japan. You will be able to figure out what things you would like to do and they give great directions and usually tell you the cost. I had a Frommer's book and found it immensely helpful.
