How to be a better street salesman?

Tokyo street vendor: Magic puppet. How does it work? Possible to buy elsewhere?

  • So, I visited Tokyo a while ago and saw a street salesman set up a little area and advertise a magic puppet. The puppet appears to have no strings, can follow commands, and can jump, flip, and float. I've seen guys selling these "magic" puppets several times and couldn't for the life of me figure out how they work. I now wish I had bought one when I had the chance. Here are a couple pics of what I'm talking about: http://www.jasoncollin.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/10-oct/magic-puppet-dancer-1280x.jpg http://www.jasoncollin.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/10-oct/magic-puppet-dancer-bottom-495x.jpg What are these puppets called? Does anyone know how the puppets work? And, does anyone know if they're available to be ordered anywhere online or bought from a store? Thanks for any help.

  • Answer:

This kind of puppet is not well known at all. Only a few vendors are selling it. So if you want to know its name, you should ask the vendor man. And if you want to buy it, you should buy from the same vendor you saw before.

I've seen these puppets many times in Harajuku and a couple times in Ueno as well. I don't know how they work, I keep watching the guy who set it up to see if he's got invisible string or maybe a magnet on his wrist disguised as a watch or something but he doesn't. And he sells them in small plastic packs that are too thin to have any sort of elaborate mechanism in them. No clue how he does it. Sorry.

I haven't seen this before, but I'm going to guess at earth magnets (very strong magnets) in the feet of the puppet. By having a hidden magnet in the palm of your hand, you could do very subtle hand gestures and the puppet would appear to 'flip', 'follow' or 'float' because of the invisible pull from the other magnet. ... Without actually seeing the puppet work via video, this is just an idea...
