Jobs in Japan for Americans?
-
Hi, I'm 14 years old. I've lived in America all my life, and needless to say, am pure American. However, I've developed a powerful passion for Japan and it's culture! I want to just like...explode! I've been playing with the language since I was in 4th grade, (starting with learning some little phrases online, hahaha..) and am now in 8th grade--going to 9th. I could safely say that I understand quite a bit. ^^ Anyway, to my question.. Since it's the end of 8th grade, we're going to high school and naturally have to pick the classes we want to take according to our career desires. Well, my only problem is that... I really don't know what I want to do. I'm embarrassed that everyone knows exactly what classes they want and what they want to do... I know nothing! I'm pretty good at English, so I thought I could be an English teacher in Japan, but I'm not exactly *crazy* about that. All I know for sure is that I want to live in Japan and be immersed in the language. I want to just like... drown in it. (Sorry to sound obsessive..) Anyways, what kinds of jobs are out there for Americans in Japan? I don't particularly care about money. I just would like something not too busy that can give me enough money to live on. I don't really have many interests...What matters the most to me is just being in Japan. Then I just need a job there so I can.. well, live.. So any ideas? And with those ideas, what kind of classes should I take in high school to prepare for that?

Answer:
First off, you should realize you need a four year degree to work in Japan. Most Americans teach English or have high tech jobs. Outside of that, there is little available to us.The only jobs we can get are usually the ones a Japanese can't do. Since you're only 14, you have many years to think this over. I'm willing to bet you will change your mind before you get out of high school. I've seen it happen before. Just stay in school and do the best you can. By the time you finish high school you may have a better idea of what you want to do with your life.

You have to wait until you get a college degree if you want to go to Japan. I don't think classes in high school will make much difference unless you take Japanese classes. Japanese class will help you somehow.

Wow, you are an enthusiastic chap. Good on you. There are several options in Japan, a guy like you may get burnt out easily having to teach English. It may be worth your while to go in University, or spend at least a year in a study abroad program inside Japan. As long as you keep your enthusiasm, improve your language ability, and show an ability to work hard, I'll bet many academic programs and scholarships would love to have a student like you. While in uni, find something that you like. You may decide that you love the language so much, you want to stay in academia as a teacher of Japanese or linguistics or culture or history of Japan, and then you need to spend another decade or so in Japan working on your thesis and Masters or Doctorate. Or you may decide to go into media/entertainment. That is another path that is not blocked for foreigners, and will allow you to be immersed. Other things you can do are IT, business, journalism, translation,.... you will find something. Don't think just because you're a foreigner you have to be an English teacher of something, because that is untrue. Also remember that networking and having コネ is more important in Japan than just about anywhere in the world, so keep that in mind whenever you're dealing with Japanese. You never know who may be able to hook you up with something.

well what rich people do is they go to a japanese language school (within japan of course). these schools prepare foreighners for college in japan (mostly chinese & koreans) I dont know about you if your gonna be able to do that or if you parents are willing to pay for it, its not that expensive I guess, they are around 1500$ per semester (every 3 months) & 6000$ a year. but also your gonna need your other fees like dormitory & your 生活必要品 & stuff. but thats what I did for around 2 years & a half, Im fortunate enough to have a rich family I guess lol. but the good thing is that your can atleast take up a part-time job if you are doing that on a studet visa( of course only if you japanese is good enough) you can even work in convinient stores like I did which is a very japanesy environment (because most gaijin are boring english teachers anyways). anyways you dont need any 4 year degree to live in japan, these people here need to shut the hell up. I came to japan when I was 17, no college degree & graduated from highschool with only a GED LOL, because I was acually homeschooled. but I guess that my case is much more rarer than normal people, my parents spoil me I guess, they pay for my studies here. I must be lucky かな Im going to japanese university now. so yah my degree will be from a japanese system of education, & I dont even have a degree from my own country LOL. Anyways dont give up your dreams, japan is a very nice place. I came to japan because I hate gaijin from my own country LOL. gaijin are stupid, just like there answers here . I must be turning japanese ww笑
