How do you get into modeling in Japan?

Model in Japan?

  • I'd like to model in Japan. I'm 16 (turned 16 today) and I think I'm like 5'8 ft. I have stunted growth so I probably won't get any taller. I'm American. My mother is Natirah descent and my dad is Eurasian descent. I have D or DD breasts (depends on the brand) so would large breasts affect my jobs. I'm slim but muscular. I have long hair right now (past my waist) but I plan on getting it cut short soon (like above my shoulders) and my hair color is red. My eyes are blue and almond shaped. My skin is pale because I stay out of the sun and don't tan. Do I sound like I'd have a chance at modeling in Japan? I'd also like to do acting and I speak Japanese well. How can I get started? Also do I sound like I would stand out a lot because I plan on moving to Japan anyway whether I model or not and I don't want to look totally out of place and foreign. Thanks.

I'm not in the fashion business so I can't tell you whether you have what it takes or not. What I can tell you is that you seem to know what you want, and where you want to be. So just go for it! It's probably not what your parents would tell you...But I have kids too, and I would tell them the same thing...It's better to try to realize your dream, even if it means not succeeding in the end, rather than not trying at all and regretting it all your life. You could go to university, become an accountant, and live a regular life where you are. Then, at 40 years old with a "good" career and a stable income, you look back, just to realize that you are not happy, and that you didn't even try to accomplish your dreams... Just remember...if the dream doesn't come true, it doesn't really matter! Find another dream, they are free!

Honestly, you might get jobs where "modeling" is not exactly the type of modeling you want to do. Eg, seedy occupations in hostess bars and adult magazines and videos. For mainstream modeling jobs that isn't too seedy it is hard to get. Its a little too early to think you want to move to Japan yet, you have to look at all your options. Japan isn't like what people see in anime.

These days its really hard to be a model in japan primarily because the market is flooded with lots of foreigners who are already doing it. Unless you have a job lined up, then your chances of coming over here and just starting as a model are pretty slim. Your best bet is to find work as an English teacher, then hunt around for modeling jobs in your free time. I don't want to spoil your dreams, but these days, being a model in Japan isn't what it used to be.

in order to move there you have to already have a job lined up before you go. You need a work visa if you plan on staying there. Also I would recommend having a university degree. It will be easier for you to obtain a work visa.

You just can't move there. And what you're talking about is a few years off anyway. Japan does NOT have an open immigration policy. To work there you need a solid job offer before you get there. As TokyoE said, you probably won't want to do the type of jobs that would be offered to you. BTW, 5' 8" is NOT stunted!!!!
