How much does it cost to go to Japan for 2 weeks?

I want to visit Japan, where should i go? I'm considering a long stay, i want to...?

  • see amazing countryside and city views. Be a part of an amazing society filled with culture. I seriously want to get involved with the Japanese culture. I just want to know where in Japan i should go to find all of these things. I want to go there for a holiday first of all but if i enjoy it i will consider staying for longer. If Possible. Where in Japan should i go to achieve all of this? How much do you think it would cost for a trip to Japan for 2 weeks with accommodation? Please give serious answers, thank you.

  • Answer:

If you want countryside and city views but relatively cheaper than the major cities or tourist centers (ie. Kyoto, Tokyo, etc.) then I recommend cities in Hokkaido. They are rich in culture but you also get city views (ie. Hakodate is known for its views; Sapporo is the biggest city in northern Japan). I spent 2 weeks in Hokkaido as a tourist and the cost, including airfare to Tokyo, 21-day Japan Rail Pass, accommodation and excursions and stops from Tokyo en route Hokkaido was less than Cdn $4200. Cities I visited included Amori, Kakunodate, Hakodate, Noribetsu, Furano, Otaru, Sapporo and Asahikawa, then Takayama, Matsumoto and Nikko (en route back to Tokyo). Things I experienced: bullet train, local trains, onsens, parks and amusement parks, hiking, sightseeing, local cuisine (fresh seafood, bbq lamb, ramen, street food, lavender ice-cream, beer-coffee, samurai houses, bear parks, lavender farms, local/street entertainment, churches and temples, traditional theatre, waterfalls, cherry blossom, etc.

First of all you can't just go to Japan. You must be invited by a resident or business owner or scholastic reasoning. Its not just getting a stamp in your passport or visa. And of course right now travel there is not recommended being the American dollar is worth nothing. A trip such as you are talking about will cost easily 20,000.00 USD.

I recommend Kyoto because there are still geisha there and it's not so urban. It is the old capital, there are many shrines, and a theme park where samurai movies are filmed. I don't know how much a hotel would be ( I stayed for free the last time). Google JTB for good airfares

Tokyo: Rukongai district Rest of Japan: Okinawa (most beautiful area of Japan, but full of American Military bases)

You will be deluged in Japanese culture no matter what you do. Spring and fall are the best times to visit Japan. Cost-wise, it is expensive, especially with the current economy. However, I recently spent 4 nights in Kyoto staying at two different hostels that were each less than $30 per person per night. Hostels.com served me well. Tokyo will be more expensive than Kyoto. Both have plenty of shrines and temples and these can become boring quickly. Kyoto would be better for scenery, Tokyo better for nightlife. Obviously there are lots of other places, but these are my personal experiences. As for getting there, that obviously depends where you are coming from. japan-guide.com is useful. This may also help: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2362.html It's a train ticket that gives 5 days of unlimited travel on ordinary trains (not the bullet train) for 11500 yen (about $130). The downside is it's only available during certain times of the year. It's also a very time consuming means of travel, since it doesn't use the bullet train, and the transfers could be confusing if you don't know Japanese. Japan Railways also has excellent ticket packages for tourists. However, these must be purchased outside the country. Hope that gets you started.
