Countries that require a passport renewal within 6 months?

Do I need to renew my (US) passport before traveling to Japan if it is going to expire within 6 months?

  • I'm traveling in May of 07 and my passport expires in October 07. I've read that some countries require your passport be valid for at least 6 months past your expected stay. Anybody know what Japan requires? thanks.

    If you don't renew it, you run the risk of being turned back at Japanese immigration. It's not a law per se, but it is an expectation that to enter Japan you must have 6 months+ validity on your passport. It is a possibility that you'd be allowed in... Japanese immigration does tend to be pretty strict on this kind of stuff. You'd be much better off biting the bullet & renewing it. Better safe than sorry.

yes, I would renew it before going just to be on the safe side. Japanese immigration officers can hassle you for having less than 6 months of validity on your passport. I doubt that they would actually turn you back (deport you), but they may give you less time for your stay than you would want -- for example, instead of the typical 90 days for US citizens they may only give you two weeks or a week or so... Some countries dont care -- many of the EU countries will let you in as long as you have at least 3 months of validity left from the last day of your departure...I just visited Germany in February, and my passport expires in June. I wouldnt do that for Japan, though.

Yes, you should renew your passport. In fact, to make sure you get it back on time, you may need to pay extra and put a rush on the passport renewal, because there's a backlog of passport applications due to the new passport requirements for visiting Canada and Mexico.
