How much is a 1-day rail pass?

Will a Japan Rail Pass allow me to travel anywhere in Japan?

  • I have been looking into buying a JR pass for my visit to Japan, but I recently saw that there are also region-specific passes, such as the JR-East pass. With a general 'Japan Rail Pass' can I travel anywhere in the country, whether that be in the region of East or West Japan, or will I need a rail pass for each of these regions?

  • Answer:

A JR Rail Pass allows you to ride on nearly all JR trains, buses and ferries across Japan. You also have to pay for it before you arrive in Japan, by getting the exchange order at many larger travel agencies like JTB. You don't need a regional pass for each region, but depending on your travel plans it might make more sense that way. The full pass is a fair amount of money, JPY 28,300 or about US$365, for a 7 consecutive day pass. If you want to stick around the area for a while, then there is a flexible 4 day JR East pass that might suit you better. See http://www.japanrailpass.net and explore which pass is best for you.

Hello Yemen, The Japan Rail Pass allows you unlimited travel on almost all JR trains, including the shinkansen (excluding the Nozomi superexpress) in all regions of Japan. If you plan on travelling all over Japan then this pass is worth getting. If you plan on only travelling in a certain region in Japan then it might be worth getting a region specific pass. The Japan Rail Kanto Area Pass is a new pass that allows you to travel in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto region including popular tourist destinations such as Mount Fuji, Hakone, Izu, and Karuizawa. Yeah, if you want to travel all over, you need both passes. Check to see where you want to go first, and try to make all your destinations do-able on one pass, and buy the one destination a la carte, if it's the only place in the other region that you want to visit, but not worth it to buy the entire pass. There are many other lines that's not JR, but local rides aren't that expensive (hopefully for you).

You can use it in all regions in Japan. But you can use it only for JR trains. There are many non-JR train lines in Japan. It's good only if you take long distance trains many times.
