Capsule hotels usually are for men only and never mixed groups. They're geared for businessmen who've missed the last train, not tourists. Be aware that hotels charge by the person usually, not by the room so you can't count on getting a room and packing a group in for $50 or whatever. Some ryokans will allow larger groups, but they, too, usually charge by the person. Youth Hostels can be a good option (there's a nice one in Iidabashi) but be aware that you need to be back at the room by 9:30 or 10:00 PM when they literally lock the doors. Someone above mentioned a ryokan in Akasaka, but I think they meant Asakusa. People often confuse the two places. Asakusa would be a good place to look. There's a couple of "Foreigner Ryokans" up there. Take a look at the Sakura House Hostel in Asakusa: http://www.sakura-hostel.co.jp/ That may be the cheapest place for a group to stay, but book early. I've walked by it and it looks like a decent, fun place.

There's a capsule hotel in Akihabara that's about $40 a night. There are others in Asakusa that are cheaper, but kinda sketchy. (just google location and capsule hotel, sites in English). There's a nice business hotel near Ueno called the Oak hotel. It was about $60 a night, but I heard rumors that they might have increased. Nice location near transportation, internet, tatami, private bath You might also try looking at Toyoko Inn. It's a business hotel chain across Japan. I've stayed at other loations, but not Tokyo. They seem to range from $50-80
