What is the wildlife like in Japan?

What kind of wildlife does Japan have?

  • In Canada, we have squirrels, chipmunks, birds, raccoons, moose (Rare), and deer (Rare). :)

  • Answer:

The notable feature of Japanese wildlife is that there is no powerful carnivorous animal. Japanese wolf, Canis lupus hodophilax, has become extinct in 1905. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honsh%C5%AB_Wolf So, we have only herbivorous animal and omnivorous animal. Black bear called Tsukinowa-guma, Raccoon dog (They have no relationship with raccoon but are canid/dog family) called Tanuki, Wild boar called Inoshishi, Red fox called Kitsune, Sika deer and Japanese macaque (so-called snow monkey) are well-known. As the result of the extinction of wolf Japanese ecological system has been damaged. And in near future bears may be endangered of extinction. Japanese serow has survived the crisis. It is believed that Japanese river otter has become extinct. We have many birds. But I believe that we shouldn’t forget that Toki, Crested Ibis, has become extinct by human activity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crested_Ibis About amphibians, Japanese giant salamander is well-known. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_giant_salamander

Sorry, just wanted to add that Japan doesnt have raccoons. They have raccoon dogs, tanuki. The tanuki is more like a canine that just happens to have a simiar mask coloring to a racoons.

these are some that I've seen around my house. http://www.japannavigator.com/wp-includes/images/pics/goo1.jpg Japanese wild boar. They travel in packs. The pack I saw had at least thirty. Can be very dangerous when threatened. http://www.freewebs.com/theirvoice/tanuki.gif next is a tanuki or "raccoon dog"--very similar as you can see to North American raccoon. Raccoons are not native to Japan, but some idiot brought one over here so they are spreading like crazy recently. Tanuki, unlike raccoons in North America, usually stay out of heavily populated areas and suburbs. http://www.rarebirdsofchina.com/images/imgl0017.jpg This is a crane--says China on the URL but they are in Japan depending on the season. Very rare nowadays and very few see them. They are about a meter tall and very impressive looking. Its one of the national symbols of Japan.

In Japan we have bears, deer, otters, minks, and even snow monkeys and momongas (small flying squirrels). We also have many birds -- herons, egrets, cranes and ducks. Japan has many islands along migration path of birds. Also many bats.
