We're going to Japan for the first time in Fall 08. What are some of the most fun things you've done in Japan?

This will be our honeymoom. We have 4 full weeks to spend in Japan and the sorrounding areas. What do late 20, early 30 somethings do? We love art, music, hiking, hot springs & off the beaten path events like roller derby. Suggestions for random events or other ideas?

Based on your list of things that you like to do, I would recommend: -Climbing Mount Fuji -Tottori sand dunes http://apike.ca/japan_tottori_sand_dunes.html http://k-kabegami.sakura.ne.jp/sakyu/e.html -Art Museums in Japan: http://www.dnp.co.jp/museum/icc-e.html http://gojapan.about.com/od/museumsinjapan/Museums_in_Japan.htm Outdoor Activities: http://www.outdoorjapan.com/section-activities.html Although you do not specifically mention culture as an interest, I still recommend going to at least some cultural sights: -Itsukushima Shrine: http://www.virtualaichi.com/itsukushima.htm http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3450.html -Hiroshima Memorial Museum and Peace Park (although you are on your honeymoon, Hiroshima is still an unforgettable place and you will learn a lot. It's also very close to Itsukushima Shrine: http://www.pcf.city.hiroshima.jp/index_e2.html -Himeji Castle: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3501.html -Kyoto: http://www.japaneselifestyle.com.au/travel/kyoto_sightseeing.htm -Nara: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2165.html

try purikura. foreigners love them. you go in to a little booth where you take pictures and then you get to draw things on them or add frames, change your hair color, switch heads, well it all depends on the brand of the booth but you can find them in game centers. shopping in harajuku is fun.

Ooh, definitely do a temple stay while you are there! Lots of Buddhist temples will let you lodge in them, like in a hotel. They will often include breakfast and dinner, and I had some of the most beautiful rooms! I have heard that some of them will even have you help out with chores such as raking leaves (although I never got to do this) and you can often attend a religious service or meditation session. Lots of temples will let you stay there- for sure some in Kyoto, and on Mount Koya (a major Buddhist site that is a daytrip from Kyoto.)

There are many fall festivals in Japan. If you contact the committees they might even allow you to participate! These festivals are so many that it is impossible to give information about them all, but the festivals in Takayama, Gifu prefecture of Kochi are famous. If you like art, there are many places where they teach traditional Japanese arts and crafts like rice paper making(in Kobe), pottery(everywhere), making balls with threads (mari), dying with indigo(in Tokushima), making magatama (pendants in the form of curved raindrop). In Tokushima and Kochi you can learn local traditional dances. In Kyoto you can visit kabuki with one of the most famous young stars now.In Kochi you can go whale watching and rafting in Shimanto river. In island Sado you can visit a gold mine, and on island Oki , Shimane pref you can watch bull fights. In Yamaguchi prefecture you can watch ukai( special way of fishing using water birds). In Shiga and Mie prefectures there are ninja museums, where you can experience the ninja life

You should go to Kyoto for the cultural and historical sights, it will be beautiful in fall. From there go to Osaka and check out the castle. Hiroshima is memorable and impressive (kind of a downer though!), and Miyajima (off the coast of Hiroshima) is definitely worth checking out. Climb Mt Fuji at night to see the sunrise from the top (research this thoroughly before you go though). Visit Tokyo to see the oldest temple in Japan, the imperial palace and other key sights that the capital city has. If you have some spare cash, go up to Hokkaido, especially Sapporo and Otaru - really beautiful towns, there's also great scenery in Hokkaido. Spend a night in a Ryokan (traditional Japanese hotel). Don't forget that travelling within Japan can be very expensive too, so make sure you have plenty of money that you can access (Japan is a cash society, you may have trouble using ATM/credit cards). HAVE FUN!!!

Go to Kyoto, and get on a tour with an English translator. There are so much histories there, and having someone explain really enhance your visit there. As for hiking, yes, Mt Fuji is the highest mountain and most famous, but for hiking, I recommend Northern Alps - Kamikouchi area. It is beautiful there.
