What are some good studying abroad programs?

What are some good language programs for studying abroad in Japan for the summer?

  • I really want a program that consists of A LOT of interaction with other Japanese students. I also prefer that the program take place in a big city, such as Tokyo. Any suggestions??

  • Answer:

I have been researching programs myself since this past summer. :) If you are a university student, it is a lot easier to find a program. Here are some suggestions for you: CIEE: Tokyo Program, Sophia University, 6 semester/9 quarter hours, 4 weeks late July - mid-August, $5,400, Housing is "Shared rooms in a local hotel with CIEE students and other guests" Website: http://ciee.org/program_search/program_detail.aspx?program_id=1741&type=part IES Abroad: Tokyo Program, Classes taught by IES Language teachers, 6 credits, June 8- July 22 (6 weeks), $4,870 (2006 prices), Housing is in dormatory style rooms in the Japan Olympic Village in Tokyo Website: https://www.iesabroad.org/IES/Programs/Japan/Tokyo_Summer/tokyoSummer.html (This is the program I probably would have participated in if I didn't find one through SUNY Buffalo.) Also, for more programs, try >,http://www.studyabroad.com/simplehtml/summhtml/japan_summ.html%22>, which is the studyabroad.com Summer Programs in Japan homepage. You can browse those and see if there are any programs better fit for you. :) I suggest also checking at state universities in your home state, because they may offer summer programs that are considerably cheaper than going through programs elsewhere because you have a discount due to residency in that state. That is how I found my program! Oh, and as a last note, I know the IES program offers opportunities for volunteering in the community, side by side with Japanese citizens and fellow foreigners. Most programs offer cultural activities that I have seen, both CIEE and IES do at least. CIEE also offers a cultural reimbursement program, where if you want to go out to see some aspect of Japanese culture, for example maybe a tea ceremony class or an act of a kabuki play, they reimburse you for the money you spent. Good luck!!! There are plenty of programs out there it just takes the effort to find them all and weigh the positives and negatives of each.

Unless you know Japanese pretty fluently and can attend a Japanese University, its going to be hard to find a language school within a Japanese University. Language schools and Universities almost always tend to be seperate. Maybe you'll be lucky and find one though because thats really cool.
