How do you get into modeling in Japan?

Taking a gap year in Japan?

  • (I am from the UK) After I finish my A-levels, I want to take a break from full time education for a year and travel. One of the countries I am most interested in spending the most time in is Japan. I'm part Japanese, but I haven't really grown up with Japanese culture, and have never been or speak much of the language. I suppose that is a lot of the reason I'd like to spend some time there. I am planning on spending a few months in Japan, in which time I hope to find a few modeling jobs in magazines or catalog (not high fashion or runway) for some income... This is an aspiration of mine. However I do not know how to go about this. Would I need some kind of visa to get a modeling job? I would appreciate genuine advice about the procedures. I have a full British passport. I'll be 18-19 when I go. Would it be worth going for a holiday and whilst I'm there talking to some agencies and try to arrange some things?

  • Answer:

The easiest way I can think of is to get a working holiday visa. You can work or study whatever you please. Though, there are some work your not arrowed as a working holiday maker for some reason (not enforced strongly). About modeling, I guess it can be hard to get the job if you don't speak much Japanese as I assume posing instructions will be Japanese. Well, you never know. An English teacher is not bad option as many people wanted to talk individually with native speaker. Older people can offer you good hourly rate than young if you do it as your own boss. Have a good time there!

It's hard to get signed to any modeling agency in Japan if you are not already represented by an agency in your home country. There are hundreds of foreign models working in Japan, but most are sent over by their mother agency in their home country to work in Japan for a few months or even a few years

if you said you are nikkei, why are you asking that? just go to your japanese relative and ask him... or if you really are nikkei go to the japanese embassy and ask.
