What places can you go to in Tokyo?

I am stopping over at Tokyo for two days over the weekend. What are the places I can go within that day?

  • Answer:

MotorCityMadMan gave you a few good places, but he is wrong about the Japanese thing. You DONT need anyone to accompany you if you don't speak Japanese. The subways and trains are all in English, and if you have a map, you can easily get around. There are quite a few English speakers there so don't be shy. In some of the major train stations, there are information desks. They'll have an English speaker to help you. Ginza, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ueno and Ropoongi are all cool areas in Tokyo to visit. You should see The Emperial Palace. It is near the main Tokyo Station. Yokohama and Chiba are both close enough to Tokyo that you can visit them by train and there is a lot to do in both places. Good luck and have fun!

believe it or not - the town of Narita (just outside of the airport) is quite beautiful - there is an amazing little hilltop temple and surrounding park with shrines, trails - very picturesque.. Walk down the street in the maintown that is lined w. shops and statues of the zodaic.. Anyway Narita town and temple is a great day trip and not far from the airport

Walk around like Japanese people.

Ginza is a must, especially on the weekend! Taxi's are expensive, check the in's and outs of other transportation, tour bus, bus and commuter trains.

First, if you don't speak or read Japanese, you'll want someone with you who can so you can maximize your time. Otherwise, you will get lost on the underground and then you will feel like you wasted your time. Ginza is wonderfully modern and glamourous, but little to do besides high-end eateries. Shibuya is nice if you want to see the typical images of Tokyo that you see on television. Lots of cool clothing shops, CD shops, clubs, and various other trendy shopping. Shinjuku is also the "typical" image of Tokyo, like Shibuya. Also has a lot of trendy places and things to do and eat. Harajuku has the most unique shops in quite possibly the entire country! The youth all hang out, esp. on the weekends, and they usually are to be seen in crazy dress. A must see! Also, the food shops are fantastic and there is a park nearby. Definitely stop by the park (Yoyogi) if you are there on a Sunday. Bring your camera. Just watch out for the rockabilly punks! Hahaha!!! If you are more into nightlife, pubs, and general mayhem, then Roppongi is your spot. It starts to heat up after 8 p.m., though you can go earlier if you wish. A lot of foreigners, American soldiers, and people from every country and walks of life. You might even meet someone who lives near you! Fun drinking, good clubs for dancing, and a real "nighttime" city. You'll leave feeling dirty. Or, just hop off at a random station and walk around! You'll never know what you'll find. Could be nothing or could be something you'll never forget! Japan is a very safe country, so no fears of getting off at the "bad end of town." Hope this helps!

Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara(if you like electronics), are all great places to go. He is right about the english though. Tokyo is very tourist friendly and don't be afraid to ask someone on the street if you need help. Japanese people are the most helpful and freindly people i have ever met. Alot of them speak some english and are really excited to use their english. The Emperial Palace is cool, but i think there are better places to see. In shinjuku, their is the Tokyo Metropolitan Gov't buildings. It is free to go up and it is the tallest building in Tokyo. You get an awesome view of the whole city. My parents came and it was one of their favorite things. I would suggest going at night because during the day, especially in the summer it is really hazy. Dont' go up Tokyo tower. It's not nearly as good. I would recomend getting the all day pass for the JR Lines. It is really helpful and more than likely you will miss a stop or two. It is only 7 dollars and very worth it. Just ask for the all day pass at the ticket window near the turn stiles. Japan is an awesome place. Have a good time.
