What is tokyo (the capital of Japan) like?

What is life like in Tokyo, Japan?

  • I am a Canadian and will be getting my Bachelor of Arts degree from York University in Toronto, Canada. I have always wanted to become a teacher but I really want to move to Tokyo (I hear it's a GREAT life out there). Is there a University with a teachers' college there? How much on average am I looking at to rent a 2 bedroom apartment? What is the cost of living like there (cable, phone, groceries, etc.)? Do you need a car over there? How does an international student get accepted into country? What is life like over there as a foreigner? Thanks in advance for your help.....

i live in osaka which is just a little cheaper than tokyo ; i'd say renting a 2 bedroom apartment in the suburbs would cost you around 100,000 yen a month, you'll need at least 1 month deposit upfront. no point getting a car, but if you do you'll need to pay around 20,000 yen per month for parking, you must have off street parking if you're a car owner. a cell phone will cost from 5 to 10,000 yen to buy and depending on the plan you select from 3,000 yen a month. some apartments have free internet if not you'll be looking at another bill from 8,000 per month. groceries are expensive especially imported food so you have to go native and give up those home tastes. most single people live in 1 bedroom apartments or 1 room apartments which you'll find a bit cheaper. getting an english teaching job shouldn't be a problem, you can explore teacher training while you're working. some schools will help you find an apartment and some even have free japanese lessons, salaries aren't that great usually between 250,000 and 300,000 yen a month before tax and health insurance is deducted. the people are great, of course you'll meet the odd one that isn't. good luck ps i think canadians can get working holiday visas which would give you more scope when looking for work

not easy if you don't know the language, everything is in Japanese, everything is very EXPENSIVE If you live in Tokyo, you will find owning a care too unaffordable, groceries, housing are no different.

Some people say japanese treat them unequal. Some people say japanese treat them very well, but at the end of the day: like you are from a different species, is how people describe it. Some japanese say they do not like being accused of treating foreigners differently, and it is their problem. I would like to believe that, but as Katt Williams says (as i replace the n word with hombre): "don't nobody just say ****, if hombres be saying you've been smoking crack for 40 years, hombre you are smoking crack." So, is japan like what everyone says it is? Well, i have lived there and did not have a bad experience in the slightest, but the fact is that people say this, and people really do feel that they are treated in an unfortunate manner in that country. If so many people report the same result, it would be awful arrogant of someone to decry their claims. Point is, if you move to tokyo, it might not be all the 'great' you heard it to be. Even if you are fluent in japanese, you still might need to be accompanied by a japanese to get certain necessities done, like opening a bank account, you might have to pay more key money to get apartments (which will be more difficult to find), and whatever other bs you will have to deal with. I know that i had a fabulous time there, it has been one of my favorite countries i have visited out of many, but i would NEVER want to live there (for a lot of reasons that i will not state)
