Answer:
Hong Kong is great during the winter months, it´s neither warm nor cold, temp is around late teens. There´re so much to see during the festive season between Xmas through Chinese New Year. It´s the only tax free city in Asia too. Check www.DiscoverHongKong.com and enjoy!

I´ll also vote for Hong Kong.
Chengdu is absolutly the best place ,but in winter ,maybe you should try Sanya in Hainan province !
If you like cold weather there is a commodity center at Shenyang. This is a pretty large city of 8 to 10 million people the way I understand. I go to this area each Chinese New Year. I think I am right saying they have the First Forbidden City. I went to this place and it has a very old area built inside walls. They have it well preserved. There is a underground river not far from Shenyang you can ride down in boats. They have a large war museum to show the brutality the Japanese inflicted on the Chinese in this area when the Japanese occupied the area to take Chinese resources for the Japanese war effort. This is east of Shenyang in the city of Fushun. Fushun also has a ancient monks monastery on top of a steep rock mountain that is a park and historical site to visit called Goer Park. They have the largest open pit for mining coal anywhere in the world here also. There is one of the larger man made lakes in all of China this area also. They have snow skiing and a very huge Ice Sculpture, the Ice Sculpture has castles and huge ice people built here each fall or when it begins to turn cold that last all winter. It is beautiful with all different colored lights built into the ice. all of this is between Shenyang and Fushun, these two cities are not more than 20 minutes ride in taxi from the center of one to the center of the other. There are many more things to do in this area but this is a beginning.

If you don't like the cold weather, even Beijing may be a bit tough to stand in Winter, and you'd want to head south. Chengdu is beautiful and a very pleasant place to visit, but to get to properly more warm places you'd have to head towards HK or Hainan, or bigger cities on the coast up towards Shanghai (Xiamen etc) . If you don't mind the cold, however, the Harbin Snow & Ice Festival is a must-see. It starts in early January, goes on for about a month and is in Harbin, about 1200km north-east of Beijing (an overnight train ride or short flight will get you there.) But beware - average temperature in Harbin is -19°C in January, so make sure to take those thermals with you!

Warmer cities are advised, though they are in the south a little far from Beijing and Shanghai. Sanya, China's best beach city; Guilin, with the most beautiful countryside scenery; Lijiang, culture and leisure. To know more about Sanya: http://www.chinaholidays.com/guide/cities/sanya-travel.html Guilin: http://www.chinaholidays.com/guide/cities/guilin-travel.html Lijiang: http://www.chinaholidays.com/guide/cities/lijiang-travel.html Chengdu, Zhangjiajie and Huangshan are good choices, but not for winter.
