Is Vegetarian food available in China (Beijing, Xi'an an HK)?

  • Vegetarian food in China. I will be travelling to Beijing, Xi’an and Hong Kong. I am not sure about the vegetarian food availability. I am a strict vegetarian and afraid of the fact that I will be starving. Does anyone know about the food choices? Any suggestions for carrying food for 2 weeks with me? I will be staying at 3-4 star hotels, but not sure. Any one has same experience? What will I get to eat?

don't know about Xi'an and HongKong but my roommate had been to Beijing couple months ago, he's quite strict vegetarian and he did not go hungry by any means. actually you have a lot of choices as there are too many west restaurants in beijing serving vege food.

Since your stay will be short, you will be fine. In the long term there are not a lot of options for vegetarians. Especially since Greenpeace found that Chinese vegetables and fruits have a toxic level of pesticides (google it). But yes, it is possible to get vegetarian dishes--though meat is more readily available. Street food includes alot of meat, so I would try little stores for snacks and you will just have to order vegetable dishes at restaurants. If you like tofu, there are a lot of good tofu dishes as well. like spicy tofu. Ma lao do fu! Good luck! Hope you have fun. I like living here for the most part.

Since vegetables is far cheaper than meat in China, you will definitely not starve. All you need to do is make sure they don't use animal oil in their dishes, you should specify this when ordering just to be sure. China has a lot of excellent "cold" dishes that are veggie only, these should be 100% safe for you as most of them don't use oil and are very healthy.

Every city i have been to has at least one totally vegetarian restaurant. If not most hot pot restaurants will provide totally veggie soup and let you add whatever you want. I have traveled around China with vegetarian daughter and never had a problem

Northern of China has pretty of vegetarian dish then Southern China. Northern China is best well kow for their buns, and noodles. Most hotel should serve some soft of vegetarian dish.

But if you're sight-seeing with a group of tourists, better to request veggie dishes with your tour guide.
