What is Hong Kong Leg?

International connection at Hong Kong International airport when Singapore-bound..coming from Newark?

  • I'm going to be studying abroad in Singapore. I will be flying Continental (now United)...the main flight is Newark-Hong Kong and then the last leg is from Hong Kong-Singapore on United (the real, original United). Newark-HKG arrives in HKG at 7:05pm HKG-Singapore departs at 8:05pm I have 1 hour to transit through. My questions are: is this connection even possible? Would I have to go through customs, security, etc? How far would both gates be from each other? Also, I know CO and UA merged, so I just want to verify that my luggage WILL be checked in all the way through Singapore. In case I missed the flight to Singapore, what happens? Is it my fault? Does United compensate??

  • Answer:

You have worried too much. If the airlines think that's enough time, that should be enough time to connect another flight. There are more problems for airlines to fix if you miss the connecting flight. So, airlines really don't want you to miss a flight due to the delay. Even they do, they usually put you thru with another carriers or next available flight to the destination. With the flight regulations, airlines won't put your luggage on board without the passenger on board. As long as you don't step outside the customs, you don't need to go thru security again. It's just like you are taking a connecting flight in America. As long as you don't go outside, you don't need to go thru security again. The Hong Kong airport is pretty awesome. Very new. They have a tram system to take passengers to and from different terminals. My advice is to pay attention to the signs. Usually, they have ground crews right at the gate to tell you where to go. Good luck!

You won't need to go through customs and security in HK, you just transit to the next gate for departure within the restricted area, one hour is enough. Your luggage will be checked all the way from Newark to Singapore. Airlines are obliged to take you to your final destination within a reasonable time frame, in case it's the airlines' fault you're late for a connecting flight, they will always put you on the next available flight sometimes even with a different airline. But if you miss a flight through your own fault, like you fall asleep, or you wander off without noticing it's time to board, you would not be compensated. That said, in case you really wander off and miss your flight, if you're able to contact the airline before your ticket is canceled, you could still catch the next flight at no extra charge. You'd need to buy a new ticket if the old one is canceled which usually happens soon after the flight departs without you, it could be 5, 15, 30 minutes.
