What is Hong Kong Leg?

Helathcare in Hong Kong?

  • Hi all, I'm moving to Hong Kong shortly to teach and was wondering what the healthcare system is like over there. According to my contract I'm going to have a Hong Kong identity card and my employers told me that means I won't have to pay as much for healthcare as a visitor. But if I broke my leg or needed an operation would it cost me thousands? Is it a good idea to take out private health cover? Any advice greatly appreciated!

  • Answer:

Hong Kong residents only needs to pay a co-pay if they went to a public hospital including prescription drugs. Most resident in Hong Kong does not carry a private health insurance. I am not sure if you will be consider as a HK resident or not. Also, Hong Kong's public health system is famous for the long-waiting. If you can afford, it won't be a bad idea to get a private health insurance. I remember it wasn't that expensive as in US. (What my mom paying was only about 1/5 of what i am paying in US. She is in macau next to HK.)

HK has no free health care like Canada, however, the doctors are very good and the price is cheap. Some people have medical insurance.

well, public care isn't that bad in hong kong. a relative of mines had his gallstone removed by them and rates were cheap, care wasn't too shabby and wait was really not that long. he stayed in hospital for more than a month and had multiple followups.
