Is Hong Kong A Country?

Is Hong Kong an individual country now?

  • Then why did in the Olympics they had an individual group for Hong Kong? Also, many places see China and Hong Kong as 2 different places...why is that? I always thought Hong Kong was a city in China. If this is a stupid question, please, no rude comments! Thanks! =D

  • Answer:

Its hard to explain.... Before 1997 it was as a dependent territory of the UK. After 1997 then it was handed back to the P.R China it became a special administrative region. Under a Sino-UK agreement it will operate with a high degree of autonomy until 2047. At the moment Chinese government is responsible for the territory's defence and foreign affairs, while Hong Kong maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, immigration policy, and delegates to some international organisations and events.

Not a country but a region. In accordance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration, and reflecting the policy known as "one country, two systems" by the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region except in defense and foreign affairs. The declaration stipulates that the region maintain its capitalist economic system and guarantees the rights and freedoms of its people for at least 50 years beyond the transfer of sovereignty. Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港), officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is a territory located on China's south coast, bordering Guangdong in the north and the South China Sea in the east, west and south. Along with Macau, Hong Kong is one of two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. Hong Kong was a dependent territory of the United Kingdom from 1842 until the transfer of its sovereignty to the People's Republic of China in 1997. The Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Hong Kong stipulate that Hong Kong operate with a high degree of autonomy until 2047, fifty years after the transfer. Under the "one country, two systems" policy, the Chinese government is responsible for the territory's defense and foreign affairs, while Hong Kong maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, immigration policy, and delegates to some international organizations and events.

Hongkong used to be a british colony until 1997, when it was returned to China. Hongkong is a special administrative area which can act almost autonomous, except for defense and foreign affairs issues. This status will be in effect at least until 2047, as concluded in the turnover protocols between Great Britain and the People Republic of China.

It's not an individual country. It was owned by the UK until the 90's and then it went back to china. Hong Kong has different laws than the rest of China. I think it acts as kind of a Province/State.

It is part of China ,but under a one country-two systems principle. It will be fully integrated in to main land China by 2047.HK has it's own judicial systems, currency and everything..

Whether is the Olympics, or any other sports or any International Organisations or Events.... Hongkong and Macau will have their own representatives as delegates and participants. (Pls see link) Hongkong SAR (Special Administrative Region) is not just Hongkong alone. It consist of Hongkong, Kowloon, New Territory and Lantau. And Macau SAR is not just Macau alone too. It consist of Macau, Taipa and Coloane. Currently also the reclaimed land named Cotai. These two SAR is located at the southern most part of GuangDong Province of China (Formerly part of Guangdong) Taiwan has also their own team to the Olympics too.... Taiwan has not yet been united back with the Chinese Mainland.

Of course not! And btw, its not a stupid question, don't worry. Some idiots think Hong Kong is in Japan! 0__o. [No offence to them too] Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region, that's why in websites they use Hong Kong SAR. Its different from China, as you can see.

Hex is right... Lil White is sorely wrong. Hong Kong is not the capital of China. Hong Kong is a big city like New York, but Beijing is the capital.

Yes Hong Kong was part of China before and they kinda divide it now..So Hong Kong is still half-part of China but Hong Kong is kinda a country now since they have their own flag and also another island in China.

I still like the answer that Hong Kong is a Capital of China, even though everyone else is right.
