Best Cities in China?
-
I am currently an American college student wanting to reside in China. I have done extensive research on various Chinese cities but I would like to know the best cities you would recommend to live. I know it is highly debatable on which is "best" so I will try to give some guidelines what I am looking for. (In order of importance to me) 1. Big city 2. Educated citizens/good Universities 3. Kung Fu schools 4. A good "hub" city where I can travel to various countries in Asia cheaply Please try to remove any biased thoughts when answering this question.

Answer:
Well there are a range of cities. But Big is not the same as cosmopolitan. So cosmopolitan cities are Beijing Shanghai Dalian Ha'erbin (Harbin) Guangzhou Nanjing Suzhou Tianjin and Shenyang are both big, but not cosmopolitan. Basically, if you really want a cosmopolitan atmosphere you have to either go to Shanghai or Beijing. But remember these are expensive cities. While Nanjing is more relaxed, cheaper and now 1 hour by train from Shanghai. 2. Everywhere is China is full of uneducated hicks, both big and small cities. Beijing has people focused on being educated, while shanghai and guangzhou the focus is on making money and business. You may be happier in Beijing for education, though all the cities I listed have excellent universities 3. Beijing has kungfu schools, but Guangzhou is near Hong Kong and Foshan (Foshan is the home of Huang Fei Hong, whose life was told partly in Once upon a time in China, Drunken Fist and Huang Fei Hong's student was Bruce Lee's teacher). 4. Guangzhou gives you a gateway to Asia (hong Kong). Beijing and Shanghai get you off to Japan or Korea more easily. I hope this helps.

Then Shanghai is the best choice. It is no doubt that Shanghai is a famous city, and the most important indicators to evaluate a city such as the economic environment, public servigoods aresure goods in Shanghai are recognized as good. There are also some schools teaching Kung Fu. As to the transportation, it is very convenient to go everywhere, if you want to go other Asia countries, just book a fly.

All I can say is guangzhou because it is pretty developed and I live there during the summer. I see many foreigners here as well. but this is a little biased since I havn't traveled much across china (only traveled 3 different cities) Hong Kong is a pretty small place with expenses close to the states. It's pretty easy to enjoy a grand lifestyle in china :]

I think the southern cities are best. First the weather is more mild in the south and trade has brought many jobs to the south. Shenzen and Guangzhou are big and have many things that appeal to western people. Guangzhou is a major hub for travel and only a short bus ride to Hong Kong.

Flingebu explained his thoughts very well. I guess because of the people and the fact it is nothing like any place I have ever lived, I like Shenyang. It is a big city with lots of people. It was once the capital of China and has many old buildings and it even has a walled inner city where the old capital once ruled from. It has the schools you list and has a new International Airport. It is close to the mountains so it has some totally different land and people you can see in about a hours drive. It is the distribution center for the cities surrounding it so about anything you want to find is there and you can find it cheaply. Did I mention my wife and her family are from this area too? Ha ha ha. Maybe I am a little prejudice but it is a very nice area.
