What are Air China's onflight features? Any good (cheap) hotel in Beijing? Are electronics cheap in Beijing?
-
I will be flying to Beijing from JFK economy on a 747 jet. I need to know if this flight has TV's, power outlets, etc... I will stay at the Loong Palace Hotel for 6 days, but I need to know what other hotels are avaiable in safe places. I also need to know how cheap things are over there. Are laptops, cameras, etc... cheap? Any suggestions, tips, warnings, Do's and don'ts, dress codes, comments, etc... will be appreciated. Thank you.

Air China's flights are light on features. I don't know specifically about JFK to Beijing, but I've taken LAX to Beijing several times. Now power outlets, bad movies, uninspired food, etc. Lots of hotels. Cheaper ones will be farther outside the city center. Most places in Beijing are safe for foreign travelers. Check out travel websites for details. Laptops and cameras are same or more expensive in Beijing than in the US. Stuff like food is very inexpensive (unless you eat in western restaurants). Clothing is very inexpensive (unless you shop in a big department store). There is not much of a dress code. Casual dress is good for almost anywhere in Beijing. The big don'ts are: don't criticise the government, don't try to preach religion, don't mess with drugs or weapons. Follow the rules (they are not unreasonable) and you will have no trouble. In general, Beijing is safe for foreigners. Locals will leave you alone (except to try to sell you something) since there are enough indiginous people to rob. But you should still be smart and cautious (don't flash large wads of money around on Bar Street late at night, for example).

No power except in flight attendant area. Neccessities like food, transportation, massages and hotels are very cheap... luxury stuff is globally-priced or expensive.
