Are there ferries between Hong Kong and Singapore? Which site sells tickets to cruises out of Hong Kong?

Is it possible to work in Singapore if the employer applies you a work permit in Hong Kong?

  • I need help. I am a foreigner who applied for work in Singapore and got hired by a company there that also has different branches in different countries. My employer applied for my work pass in the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore which was unfortunately rejected, but the company head offered to apply for my work permit in Hong Kong but will work in Singapore, is this possible? I asked how long the processing of my documents will take and he said 1-2 weeks. It is now the 2nd week. Supposedly, he said in our conversation that once my permit gets approved in Hong Kong, I can start my work in Singapore by July 4th, which I think won't be happening since I still have not received any update from the company in the past two weeks. I just want to know if it is possible for me to have a work permit in Hong Kong, registered in the same company in Singapore, but work in Singapore instead? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Answer:

It depends on what "work" means in your case. There are business travelers everyday going overseas to do some work, and even when they are working inside a foreign country, they are still doing working for and on behalf of their own company and not for any foreign company. Any work visa issued in Hong Kong only applies to employment within the city of Hong Kong and can't apply in Singapore, and vice versa. With a HK work permit you can still "work" in Singapore as a representative from your Hong Kong office, but you cannot stay in Singapore for more than 6 months out of every year, and need to maintain residence in Hong Kong throughout your permit.

You need a valid employment visa from the nation that you are working in, not a different nation. In order to work in Singapore you must have a Singapore employment visa. No exceptions. Hong Kong employment visas have absolutely nothing to do with working in Singapore. Hong Kong employment visas let you work in Hong Kong, not somewhere else.

No. However, if they had first applied for you the work permit in Hong Kong and then apply the work pass for you, there's a higher chance that MoM in Singapore will approve it. Another thing, it is possible for you to apply for a work permit in Hong Kong, provided that the company's Hong Kong branch will help you with it. If you succeed in getting the permit in Hong Kong, then you can add this to your application in Singapore. Lastly, if you are certain that the company has many branches in different countries, then I assume they are very big and well-known. It is unlikely for a big company who is sponsoring your work pass in Singapore to be rejected. It could probably be because your application had discrepancies on the type of pass versus your qualification. MoM is limiting the S-pass applications and prioritizing E-pass and above.
