I have a few questions concerning college and working in China?
-
I am taking a TEFL course online so that next summer, a year from now, I will go and teach english in China. I would like to earn a 4 year degree while I am there. My questions: Are there any American universities in China's more modern cities where this is possible? I'm sure China's bigger cities are internet capable so if I decided to do a bachelors program via distance learning from my American university will I have any technical difficulties? I figure I can work full-time, do school full-time and learn another language best outside of the US. Any information is great. I saw an add saying that it's good to have money saved up just incase but that generally most people who teach in China are well looked after and that you can save a good amount of money while you are there. This school where I'm taking TEFL will help me secure a job when I'm ready. I am black so I will try to stay in a bigger city. I would like to stay for graduate school, too.

So what you are asking is, which American univ offers online courses. . .depends on what you want to study. Yes, most places in China have the internet, but many things are censored. . .and yes, there are ways to get around that I guess, but if your assignment were to depend on info that was not accessible to you. . .or what if your computer went down, where would you take it to be repaired? How would you explain the problem to the Chinese technician? Part of living in another country is dealing w a million little problems. Things you never thought of before suddenly become problematic, and there might be no one to ask, no one to help you or understand you. . .or maybe there will be friends who want to help, but really don't know how. I am not sure what kind of visa you could get. . .you can only get a student visa if you are studying in China, and it is illegal to work if you are a student. There are people that do, but you run the risk of being deported. . .I think anyone that knew you would know you were working, would wonder where you got your money. Risky. I am afraid you would fall behind in the online courses just trying to make ends meet in a foreign country. Living abroad requires so many changes, so many adjustments. . .and to try piling so much on your plate and making your living illegally on top of that. . .it is just NOT a good plan. I would advise that you save some money and travel to China for a few weeks (after all this Olympic hoopla is over). Just go as a tourist and check out the scene. You may find that you don't like China after all and have no desire to live there!!
