Why do so many foreigners buy fake brand names deliberately in China?
-
If there was no demand for these goods, then no one would make them. Without customers, there is no store. And don't give me that ''i didn't know it was fake, i thought it was real so i bought it, since all the real ones are made in china too.'' No one will believe that excuse. Let me give you an example, look at this LV purse in the link below, it costs 1970 US dollars : http://www.louisvuitton.com/us/flash/index.jsp?direct1=home_entry_us When a foreign tourist pays 200 kuai for a counterfeit, DO THEY REALLY THINK THEY ARE BUYING THE ORIGINAL ONE? DO THEY REALLY THINK THEY CAN GET ALMOST 99% OFF THE ORIGINAL PRICE JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE IN CHINA AND THE ORIGINAL ONES ARE MADE IN CHINA? only an idiot will believe their excuse. And I, have already accompanied numerous foreigners(ex bf's aunt, english teachers in the school i went to who think my english is the best in the class and i can translate for them, their friends etc...) to those markets to buy these. They used me as an interpreter(even though they really didn't need me), i didn't buy anything in the market except a soda or ice cream. But all the women i went with bought all kinds of fake purses, and at the end of the trip they looked really enthusiastic. Why do they love to buy counterfeit goods so much? is it because US economy is so bad they can't afford the real one? I don't get it. If i can't afford the real one, i would buy a purse for 50 dollars in Target, why a fake one?

Answer:
I buy most of my clothes at Walmart and Target because that is what I can afford. Their moderately priced clothes look good, are well made, and are very durable. I don't worry about famous brand names, as many of my fellow Americans do. Americans have an obsession with status and self-indulgence that drives them to buy counterfeit "brand name" goods. Counterfeit goods are for sale everywhere in America, but there is one place that really stands out. American Internet retailer eBay is the world's largest counterfeit goods marketplace. At least 95% of all brand name clothing, leather goods, and watches sold on eBay are fake. Where else can you buy a Rolex watch for $19? Nike sneakers for $22? Armani suits for $28? Counterfeit goods give their owners a false sense of being powerful, wealthy, and opulent. Counterfeit goods are an ego boost for people whose real lives are boring, mundane, and pointless. Imagine the absurdity of a gas station attendant wearing a Cartier watch. "I bought it on eBay for $14 and it's guaranteed to be 100% genuine!", says the attendant as he wipes grease from his face. People need to accept who they are and not pretend to be someone else. It is OK to be middle class, so people should stop pretending to be upper class. If someone makes $50,000 per year, then that's great. They don't need to waste half of their income buying pretentious "brand name" products whose quality is no different than products sold at Sears and Target. It is even worse to buy counterfeit brand name products. Yikes! What is the point?

Your theory is as flawed as your statement. The very reason fake items were made in the first place is because greedy people use them to deceive and trick the innocent buyers for quick cash. The crooks thought of international brands that sell popularly in foreign countries, so they got the idea of imitating the brand, logo, and product, making identical product using cheap low-quality materials. Unfortunate innocent buyers are deceived and scammed. Now we know why the devil is such a good deceiver and trickster. Below is an example of this popular counterfeiting business in China, this woman who owns a furniture business in China is imitating a popular Italian brand furniture, by copying and using its brand name and logo on her products, she sold millions of dollars worth of furniture bearing the faked Italian brand. Unsuspecting buyers were deceived, when the news broke out, even Chinese buyers were tricked and are angry at her. http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/stories/da-vinci-furniture-responds-to-false-importing-scandal.html So, if we are to follow your flawed reasoning, what you mean is this poor innocent guy from China, and other Chinese people like him who have been deceived, who bought the fake furniture by accident, is an .....?

That is their contribution to China's massive counterfeit merchandise manufacturing industry. They are just trying to stimulate China's ailing domestic markets.
As far as I know tourist who visit places like the Silk market which only sell genuine goods according to government sources and it is quiet common for people to haggle for places. Tourist handbooks and such always tell them to first ask for a stupid discount off because the vectors always over charge people by 10 or 30 times the amount. An example is I bought a Mao cap for like 7 rmb when the vendor wanted 70 rmb, that is a good 90% discount, another time I bought a wooden figure for 21 rmb and the vendor wanted 270 rmb another 90% off. This is because I knew the price of them. Now you can understand why tourists ask for 99% off because they don't know the Chinese market value. Also things are much cheaper for the Chinese market for example genuine windows software is much cheaper in China than in the West due to the cost of living and to stop counterfeiting. So in reality tourists don't believe they are buying fake goods but they are getting a good deal.
