Yes you do need a visa, I went there for four days and needed one, though in Hong Kong you don't. I'm from Australia.

You must have a visa to go to China for any reason and for any amount of time. You need one if you stay for 30 seconds do to CPR on a dying person. As for how to get one, get it before you leave. US citizens cannot get a "same day visa" while other passport holders may be able to. I live in Los Angeles and what I do is that I bring my passport photos(to be used for the visa) and my passport and hand them off to a travel agency in Chinatown and get it with my plane ticket. It is alot more easier than to do it yourself and while there is a fee that the travel agency charges in addition to the visa fee, it is well worth it. If you live in a large city with a Chinatown, you could probably do the same.

I use Visa Express a on line service to get my Chinese Visa. It is easier for me this way. As another answerer has said there is a fee but it is small. You can check this place out online. If you are in the US there is very few places you can go without a visa. I went to Mexico a few years ago and did not need a visa, also to Canada a few years ago and did not need a visa. These places may still be the same or they may have changed by now. I went to Cozumel for vacation and Red Lake Canada for hunting and fishing. These places make money off the tourist that come to their places. China treats Americans the same way the American government treats them, cost wise. That was what I was told.

Chinese embassy web site, unlike many embassies, is great in explaining the differences between different kind of visas: work, tourist, journalist, student and the difference in price. If you had the US passport and thought that entitles to everything free then hold that thought and experiece what most of the planet experiences: queues at embassies to get entrance to a country.

Yes, you will need a visa. The Chinese Consulate in San Fransicso, CA has a good explanation of the visas and of the process you need to follow in order to get one. http://www.chinaconsulatesf.org/eng/qianzhen/
