China imports to the United States?

  • I have read some questions regarding the trade with China. Some people answered that the US would fall. Well is it not already falling? I prefer the word failing. How much does China buy from us? Is it an even steven so to speak? Why was the United States during the 1960's through the 1980's doing so much better than now? What has changed that caused the mass job losses, government over spending? All I hear on the news is doom and gloom. The United States can produce anything as it did in the past. I would rather pay more for an item made in America and know that my fellow american has a job, a roof over their heads, food on the table, and a chance of the american dream. Also the government talks about social security being in the red when that was never ever their money to touch. Must be nice to vote yourself a raise. Why not put it to a vote with the tax payers who pay their salaries. You know, for the people and by the people. I might add that many items from China have been recalled due to lead. Pet food was recalled a couple of years ago too. Biggest laugh is the United States borrowing from China who kill their own people if they should defy or question their government. Wake up people and smell the coffee brewing.

    People are too busy complaining about illegals who are taking janitorial jobs...lol. Most of the Hispanics are just moving into the same area, so it doesn't really affect most of us. All kinds of jobs, from manufacturing and engineering are going overseas. Americans care more about buying the better product from other countries rather than pay for a good product at home. America will always be "okay" for the people at the top, but the majority will not do as good, especially African Americans.

Well, 1st off trade has more to do with currency exchange rates. When the dollar is stronger than the Chinese Yuan, that means products produced in the U.S. cost more. So products produced on China, cost less for both Chinese people, and Americans, than U.S products do. China manipulates their currency, intentionally keeping it undervalued to create a trade imbalance. Recently, Congress has made threats and complained about it. But here's the problem The U,S. does not borrow directly from China. The U.S. Treasury prints securities, in different forms, then sells them to investors, similar to notes a bank loans you money against. . But mainly they are borrowing money for a specific period of time, at rates determined by the Federal Reserve, or by auction. http://www.publicdebt.treas.gov/ In fact, much of money the government borrows, are in U.S. retirement accounts. If you have a 401K, IRA, you will notice on your statement, a portion is in bonds, or conservative low risk, trust funds. Those are mainly U.S. Treasury securities. The reason they invest is Treasury securities, is the same reason China and other foreign governments, and private investors do. They offer a safe, guaranteed place to put money to offset higher risk and aggressive investing. In 2008 when the market crashed, the only reason mutual funds, 401K's, IRA's didn't lose everything, was because of those securities. When China under values their currency to the dollar, that creates a trade imbalance. The Chinese government then has a surplus of U.S. dollars. Much of that surplus is used to buy Treasury securities. Which gives the U.S. government cheap money to borrow. So to answer your question, the difference today from decades ago, is the U.S. was once a major supplier of agriculture, manufactured goods, and technology, we sold to the world. Today, the U.S. literally sells debt to the world.
