Kowloon compared to Hong Kong Island?
-
US Citizen most likely attending grad school in Hong Hong in Kowloon in August. It appears to be that most of what Americans perceive Hong Kong to be is Hong Kong Island. What is HK Island like compared to Kowloon? Would I be better off living in HK Island and commuting to school in Kowloon, or does it not make much of a difference? Anyone with any insight to help me with my move will be greatly appreciated :)

Answer:
It just depends on which side you like. Go there and see for yourself. There's affordable rentals on either side.

Um, actually, all the expat nightlife is located on HK Island - Lan Kwai Fong, Soho and Wan Chai to be specific. That's also where you are going to find a majority of western restaurants. It's a bit upperclass and snobby (for my tastes anyway), but apparently all the rich white bankers dig it, so maybe you will too. And it's got beaches (which you'll definately want to be near in August) Kowloon is the primary tourist zone, a haunt for the international migrant set and also a congested residential area. It's noisy, colorful and always crowded. But the best view of HK is on THIS side of Victoria Harbor. Either way, the HK public transit system is swift and extensive, so I'm sure it doesn't matter where you'll live because you'll be zipping around all over the place just the same. Both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon has economic & expensive areas. If i were you, I would live in a nice area in Kowloon instead of Hong Kong. Commuting thru MTR across the Harbor can be very hectic.

living in hong kong island is much of a higher standard than staying in kowloon area. It's like comparing Class A to Class C... but i prefer living in Kowloon side...

HK is alot more westernized. Also, that's the place where most expats are. It is a commerical area with a nightlife. The shopping and housing is alot more expensive. The major night life is the bars in Wan Chai, also at Lan Kwai Fong in Central. As for Kowloon, you see more of the traditional places. Shopping is cheaper and the food is alot better. of course, the place is more crowded with average class people. Not that it makes a different but in Kowloon, you can see a variety of culture.

I think that it would be more expensive in Hong Kong. I would prefer to live close to school and in a somewhat less crowded situation but that's me.

Actually the two islands are very close,,,especially u have subway available. I heard "Kowloon offers people better night life".If u want to do more shopping, then Kowloon is a better choice, but who knows, maybe u just wanna rest at ur room:)
