Can China's faulty educational system ever be repaired?

In the rankings of the world's top twenty universities, 13 are American, 5 British, but no Chinese. You have to go down to #49 before you find a single mainland Chinese university. When I taught at one of China's key (top) universities, teachers were asked to prepare two final exams,This was so that students who failed the exams could go to the department and take a make-up exam. It did not even matter if they came to class or not, they could just keep taking the make-up exam until they passed. Just like in kindergarten - everyone is a winner. Add to this the endemic cheating that happens in virtually every Chinese classroom and you have a prescription for failure. This is why so many Chinese students asked me to help them with admission applications for the U.S. They knew, and the employers knew, that the Chinese educational system is a sham and that they would have little credibility with an employer without an American or equivalent higher education. Clearly, China is focusing on quantity rather than quality in gradating virtually everyone who enrolls. http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/Rankings2009-Top200.html

Answer:
I'm glad you were able to experience China! I taught in China as well as Japan, Russia and the US so I've seen how a few different systems work. My students in China actually encountered an opposite problem. If they did poorly on one test and then on another it was as though they were categorized and stuck in a lower level for life. If they weren't good at tests or were of a more creative mind... doomed. I wish my students had been given more chances! It looks like the system can be varied like it is here in America. To answer you question directly, I do think the education in China is improving. More then ever China is letting people in and letting people out. We are learning from each other. Its not "fixed" yet but we have to be patient with this. Despite the slow progress I believe we are experiencing PROGRESS in China all the same. It is the teachers job to report issues and make sure proper procedures are taken for cheaters. My experience taught me that punishments were usually quite harsh for students who broke rules. Though I understand dealing with folks in academic leadership positions in China can be quite... challenging. You are in a powerful position as a teacher. Introduce your students to ethics through stories and by example. Be a leader and, when appropriate, be a friend. You are a part of the progress!

Based on your link, China's educational system especially universities is quite strong but what they lack of is better staff and better teachers and are extremely inconvenient to non-Chinese students.

The Chinese education system is a joke and beyond repair. My experience of it is that many (if not ALL) of the Chinese teachers are corrupt and more than willing to take bribes to give their students pass marks. When I failed students they simply went to their "leader/s" and handed over a small "donation" and they were then marked as having past the exam. Corruption starts at school in China and becomes a way of life before the students graduate from middle school. This then carries on into their work /political/adult lives. That's why the country is riven with graft from the very top of Govt. down to the beggars on the streets. Their system of society is utterly broken and it will take another revolution to change it. But even then it will continue as it is ingrained in the Chinese culture. I suggest that anyone that doesnt believe the low standards of education and ethics read the article (link below) that says:- "Zhang has listed poor teaching, centralized management, an over-emphasis on research and low ethical standards as main problems that force prospective students to vote with their feet." http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/usa/2010-08/26/content_11208655.htm The article also quotes from a Jiaotong university report that ranks the "best" Chinese universities at only in the 151 - 200 bracket. " In the list produced by the Jiaotong University, none of the Chinese schools made it to the top 100 spots. The highest ranked Chinese institutions were Peking University and Tsinghua University in the 151-200 bracket, while another 20 elite Chinese schools were ranked in the 200-500 field..." This is one of the reasons , so the article says, that many thousands of Chinese students are flocking abroad to get their education. They cannot get the same high standard of education in their own country. It's beyond repair ! Even the Chinese people themselves are admitting this fact and "voting with their feet" ! I wonder where"Anna baby" and "cultural Insight" (below) were educated? EDIT:- Anyone that tries to tell people to "Visit any of the science or technology departments at Harvard, Yale, Oxford, or Cambridge and 90% of the graduate students are Chinese and Indian. Half of the university faculty are Chinese and Indian too..." is either ignorant or, more likely, LYING ! And WHY are there so many Chinese students at "foriegn" universities? Because they cannot get as good an education in China as they can outside of China. Or will people claim that Chinese students go abroad to get a worse education? They (the posters) cannot have it both ways . The truth is that Chinese students make up just 12% of students at UK universities. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/7947157/British-universities-rejected-by-Chinese-as-US-institutions-top-Jiaotong-rankings.html If Chinese education is so good why is at least one Chinese poster here studying in the USA? Why did they not continue their studies in China?

You forgot to mention that the best students in American and European universities tend to be from China and India. But they are all educated outside of China. Visit any of the science or technology departments at Harvard, Yale, Oxford, or Cambridge and 90% of the graduate students are Chinese and Indian. Half of the university faculty are Chinese and Indian too. They are educated outside of China and chose to stay away from China, knowing the faulty educations in China. Let's face reality, shall we? Chinese and Indians dominate the university faculties and graduate schools around the world. They know the faulty Chinese educational system therefore they choose to not return to China.

Hi Richard, My comrades in the 50 cent party are now attacking your question, this is very common since you offended them by insulting their IQ. But don't worry, they will continue calling out their minions of multiple troll accounts to overturn the topic. What you said is very true. Many students in China today have part-time jobs as mistresses and playmates to some very rich Chinese businessmen. That explains the poor performance in class, otherwise they are good in performance in other categories to their bosses like this girl: http://www.chinahush.com/2010/08/19/being-a-mistress-having-one-night-stand-is-to-be-expelled-from-universities Many university students in China also want to have sex with their professors so that they will have a guaranteed pass in a graduate degree or any level they desire like this girl who bribed a 70 year old professor for sex in exchange for a PhD: http://www.chinahush.com/2009/08/19/female-graduate-student-bribed-70-year-old-professor-with-sex-for-phd-admission Even after graduation, these girls will not apply for work and instead apply as mistresses. One of the requirements posted by the employer includes the weekly number of intercourse needed. Many have applied to this job, we look forward to a very promising future : http://www.chinahush.com/2009/05/18/mistress-recruitment-includes-number-of-weekly-sexual-intercourse-as-a-requirement-girls-send-resumes-to-apply You can see the evidence in one of our comrades who makes up stories about studying in another country but instead is running off to USA and sleeping with random foreigner men. Our leader Mao taught us to be this way, we owe this great educational system to him and we will not repair it ever.

First, bkk the ones you ask where they were educated, the nickle workers. If you read their answers very much you would know. One went to school in a (hick) village and graduated in the top 50%. The other is his clone. I would not say this if they could answer a question with some kind of facts. Or if they could read others sources and understand simple English. As for the schools in China, first you have to look at the schools and see the truth. By this you have to see what is wrong and acknowledge that is the problem. Then you can start coming up with solutions to make the schools better. So yes China can fix their schools. They should do this for the young people so they would be of better quality when it comes time for them to take control of China. But China first has to see the truth in all things and deal with it. Not try to whitewash or change it.

In America, people drop out of school, in communist China people are obsessed with grades.

It's faulty ? And I still have to pay that much for it . Is this all schools . Not all of them ? Well I guess I will be sending my girl to school for a long time , if she goes to Chinese school and then comes to America and goes to and American school . How long can you get money from the IRS for a kid in school .
