What is china like today?
-
I'm considering learning chinese and spending some time over there, and while I'm fascinated with their culture and artwork, I'm a little unsure of what to really expect, especially since their government is communist. I've heard they deny the truth about Tienemen square and the situation with Tibet is just kind of.....scary. Things like this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-564629/Pictured-How-China-gets-troops-stand-attention--pins-collars-crosses-backs.html don't help much either. I'm just wondering if any foreigners who have lived there or been there could explain how the Chinese people are and how the government above them is today.

In what ways has this group Tibetan peopole been demonised? - Our Spiritual leader has been demonized by China for decades. - Our Culture/Society as a whole has been mocked/labeled as backward. - We Tibetan Refugees have been labeled as Terrorist. - We have been and still are constantly under repression. - We can't live freely in our own Country, we can escape the Tyranny (check NangPa La) - Our younger generations are not taught Tibetans, if they are then the whole Tibet has been turned into CHINESE VERSION Of what it ought to look like and feel like. - Our way of lives have been trampled on. - We are treated as 2nd class citizen if not lower. - Our temples & monasteries have been put under Strict Regulation by the Chinese Gov't and China continues to Destroy our monasteries and temples (check Destruction of Serthar Buddhist Institute) and much much more...check the link if you want to understand this in detail

Learn Chinese and you won't want to come back. If not, it's like Chinatown in New York without the Americans and tourists. No kidding. China's safe and cool, they mind their own business.

I have found it to be a lot like the US in many ways. Government and politics aren't talked about all that much, at least not with the people I know. Many things are done to get around government regulations, so while Chinese seem to like their government, they also dislike the bureaucracy. I have found the police have much less of a presence than in the US, between the two America looks more like a police state. Also it is a very safe country. You might get ripped off for being foreign, but no violent crimes. And usually you will only get ripped off when you go to touristy places. I did not like visiting Beijing for that reason. Chinese people are very friendly and will go out of their way for you. I have met many great friends here. I have been here 6 months and I am planning to stay another 1 1/2 years at least.

they leave you alone if you don't cause trouble for them. The west have exagerated much of what China is like. It is much more open but it still is not that nice of a place to live.

People are very nice if you get to know them. Like everywhere else, you have to be cautious, because as a westerner you stand out and merchants think you have money. When I was there 2 years ago, I found the country trashed with pollution. Water was polluted, soil was polluted and the air in cities was heavily polluted. Seems they don't have environmental regulations. Don't think it's cleaned up yet.
