How many active mobile subscribers are there in China?

China big city residents . . .?

  • Read this in an article today: "According to official Chinese figures, the country has 384m internet users, but 745m mobile subscribers, many of them regular users of the internet on their handsets. Last year, China Unicom and its two competitors started third-generation mobile businesses and have signed up millions on customers to the higher-end services." http://edition.cnn.com/2010/BUSINESS/03/24/china.unicom.google.ft/index.html?hpt=T2 How many people in your area do you think access the internet via cell phones? I know it's still almost unheard of in my province. Between the cost of the phones to be able to do so and the cost of the service, I don't know of a single person who has the service. I do recognize that I live in a poorer part of the country so I wonder how different it is in the larger cities. Thanks!

  • Answer:

I live in a big city that is in a part of China where few tourists ever visit so it is more traditional than most cities. Few people speak a word of English but most do have Internet access and own mobile phones.Even among my friends who are quite tech savvy and like to own the latest gadgets, I have never seen any mobile subscribers.

Cell phone internet service has been available in Shanghai for several years. All of China Telecom's new phones have "Esurfing" functionality. China Mobile and China Unicom have similar offerings. Young people people subscribe to the service for social reasons and older people for business reasons. I would guess, with emphasis on the word "guess", that less than one quarter of the cell phone users in Shanghai subscribe to cellular internet service.

I think accessing to Internet via cell phone is quite inconvenient. I have a middle level cell phone with common size of screen, it is very very incomvenien to browse webpage, even browsing wap website isnt conenient. Especially, my cell phone is not so called "intelligent cell phone", most softwares cant run on it, such as internet map, GPS locator. And I am not a fan of QQ chatting. So after 3 months I gave up. I live in Beijing, I am client of China Mobile. The fee of 10M per month is 5yuan, not expensive, lots of ppl use it.
