Answer:
I live in China and I use a paid VPN every minute I'm on the internet. I know my university monitors computer use and yet they've never said a thing about the fact that I'm supposedly on a single website for hours at a time. You might find this article to be of interest. I use one of the services mentioned in the article. http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/02/18/internet.censorship.business/index.html EDIT: Good VPNs don't disappear. I've used the same provider for the past four years. You get what you pay for. Do some research and find the good ones and be willing to pay some money. The investment is well worth it.

Google is available in China. So is Yahoo, MSN, CNN, BBC, and almost everything else. A couple of sites are blocked from China because they contain porn and pro-Nazi stuff, but other than that you are good to go. Youtube has some nasty political videos. Proxies and VPNs are illegal in China. Most proxies and VPNs just take your money and disappear anyway, so why bother? The Chinese government finds new proxies and VPNs quickly and blocks them, so you never get to use them. China arrests people for breaking their internet laws, especially laws involving national security. I wouldn't risk this if I were you. Do you really want to end up in a Chinese prison because you watched a Youtube video? How stupid would that be? Just stay home if you can't live without Youtube.

You think China blocks Facebook, but doesn't block proxies? Wake up. The proxies are also blocked in China. Duh . .

If the proxy works in China, it's because the Chinese government wants it to work, or doesn't mind if it works. You might be monitored when using these. I don't know if you'll get into serious **** if you try to bypass the firewall, but I wouldn't risk it. If you don't get into serious ****, your future visas may get denied, etc.

First of all you can get into google at anytime and anywhere in China. For Facebook, twitter and youtube, you can use proxy, and it is absolutely legal. So, don't worry, you won't get caught. some good proxies? You can buy the services from VPN proxy server in China. By using their softwares, you can access to fb and youtube easily . They charge by monthly membership, and the price is around 5USD to 10USD.

No one will care. Using proxies and VPNs is perfectly legal. If they were banned, international business would stop, the international banking system wouldn't work, and governments wouldn't be able to send classified information to their overseas embassies etc. Freegate (Version 7 is the latest) still works. Google is not blocked.

I lived in China for four years and I understand how you are feeling. I used a VPN from my university for some of the time and never had any problem. Most any international business uses VPN's so its not really a huge legal issue. I'm sure you won't get in trouble for using one unless you are doing some highly illegal activity while on it, Facebook and youtube will be fine. I used to use a program called freegate (designed just for getting over the great firewall) which worked pretty well but am not sure if it still works. I also had success with ultrasurf. I had a friend that swore by toonel.net but that never worked for me. If it is really important to you, possibly you should just do some research about paid vpn sites and get one before going over there.

Don't worry about it. I don't think it is so much that the sites are illegal, they just don't want them available to the general population. Unless you use them to incite an uprising, I am sure you will be fine accessing all your favourite sites through a proxy. My opinion is that paying for one is the easiest way, though I also know there are free ones. I have had no trouble with mine though.
