Why did Marco Polo travel to China?

Why did marco polo travel to china?

  • Answer:

Marco Polo's father and uncle were previously in China (1266) and had met with Kublai Khan in Dadu (Beijing). Kublai Khan requested that a letter be delivered to the Pope in Rome, and an envoy return with 100 Christians acquainted with the Seven Arts (grammar, rhetoric, logic, geometry, arithmetic, music and astronomy). Kublai Khan also requested that the envoy bring him back oil of the lamp in Jerusalem (annointing holy oil). In 1271 the Polos embarked on their journey... Marco tagged along (he was about 17 at the time). On reaching the Yuan court (sometime around 1274-5), the Polos presented the sacred oil from Jerusalem and the papal letters to their patron. Why did Marco Polo travel to China? Probably his mother wanted a break from raising a teenager... she told Marco's father that it was his turn.
