How did they built the Great Wall?

Does anyone know why the Great Wall of China was built?

  • My sister and her boyfriend are going into this crazy battle about why it was built. My sister say that it was built to keep out the Mongols but her boyfriend says that it was built to keep out evil dark spirits. Does anyone really know? They won't trust anything anyone says.

  • Answer:

The Great Wall of China is an immensely long man-made wall that was built to keep out invaders. The Great Wall spans nine provinces and its total length is 6,700 km (3,948 miles). The Great Wall extends from ShanHaiGuan (the 'Old Dragon Head'), a seaport along the coast of BoHai, in the east (near BeiDaiHe resort) to JiaYuGuan Pass in GanSu Province in the west. Like a giant dragon, the Great Wall of China winds its way across grasslands, deserts and mountains. http://www.kinabaloo.com/great_wall.html The website has some really nice pictures of the Great Wall near Beijing. Good luck!

The great wall of China was designed firstly to protect the northern boarder not just from Mongols but from any people attacking from the north. The mongols first appeared round about 800 AD while the wall itself has was been build in parts with the most famous parts in 220 BC. As for keeping evil dark spirits out, it could well be a possibility as in Chinese folk law as spirits can only walk in a straight line. Any barrier in their path they could not walk around. This is part of the reason why some Chinese courtyards has screens at there entrance, so that ghosts could not walk into the home and bring them bad luck.
